Do current consent and confidentiality requirements impede or enhance research with children with learning disabilities
Recent changes in UK legislation on data protection and confidentiality have affected key aspects of the research process. They have led to much stricter approaches to research governance, leading in turn to more stringent scrutiny by medical ethics committees and National Health Service (NHS) Trusts. The Transition to Adulthood for Children with Down's Syndrome
This paper reports on the transition pathways to adult status of 35 young adults with Down's syndrome over a six-year period (1987-93). Despite educational, social and employment legislation aimed at ensuring greater integration into the community, qualitative and quantitative analyses of 'quality of life' outcomes in this group produced a disappointing picture of a narrow range of leisure opportunities, negligible placement in employment, and co…

Instability of Performance on Cognitive Tests in Infants and Young Children With Down's Syndrome
Stability of cognitive performance in assessment situations was investigated in a group of 18 children with Down's Syndrome (DS) aged 6 months to 4 years. Two widely used tests of early cognitive development were presented: the Mental Scale of the Bayley Scales of Infant Development and a series of Piagetian object concept tasks. Both sets of tasks were presented in the same testing session, with testing repeated one to two weeks later. Both qual…
A Comparison of Two Procedures for Teaching Discrimination Skills to Down's Syndrome and Non‐handicapped Children
S ummary . Two different strategies for teaching discrimination to Down's Syndrome (DS) and non‐handicapped children were compared for relative efficiency: trial‐and‐error and errorless learning. Two types of discrimination tasks were used, shape and nonsense figure tasks. A pre‐test was used to match children for pre‐existing ability. Errorless learning proved to be the superior training strategy in each group, both during training and in post‐t…
