  • Exposure to Interactive Media, but at Low Levels, is Associated with Better Executive Functioning in Children

Meryem Şeyda Özcan, Yasemin Kisbu‐sakarya•ARTICLE•Media Psychology•2026

This meta-analysis investigates the relation between media exposure and executive function (EF) skills in children between zero and six years of age. We analyzed data from 30 studies with 121 effect sizes and 7,740 children and explored both the overall association and potential moderators. While the overall relation between media exposure and EF skills was non-significant, several moderators were found to play important roles in this association…

  • The impact of learning to code on higher-order executive-functions

  • Effects of pre- and post-displacement difficulties on parenting behaviors of refugee fathers

    Open Access•Gamze Turunç, Yasemin Kisbu‐sakarya et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Adverse effects of war trauma and post-displacement difficulties on refugee families are well-documented in the previous literature, however, there is considerably less research with refugee fathers focusing on different types of stressors. The current study tested a multiple linkage model between war trauma, different post-displacement difficulties, paternal mental health and parenting behaviors. Data was collected from 286 Syrian refugee father…

  • My Creative World (MCW)

Fuat Balcı, Gökçe Elif Baykal et al.•ARTICLE•Creativity Research Journal•2024

Many training programs have aimed to improve creative thinking abilities in various settings. The study of relevant literature revealed a relatively lower number of creativity programs for children than those developed for adults. The current work introduces a new and comprehensive nine-week long creativity intervention program implemented (out of school-setting) in 8- to 11-year-old children of socioeconomically disadvantaged families in Turkey.…

  • Fathering styles in a traditional culture and its association with marital relationship

    Open Access•Yasemin Kisbu‐sakarya, Yasemin Kisbu et al.•ARTICLE•Family Process•2024

This study had two main objectives. The first goal was to examine fathers' parenting styles in a society with traditional patriarchal values. The second goal was to understand the extent to which marital relationship variables (i.e., marital satisfaction and spousal support) are related with the identified fathering profiles. The theoretical and empirical underpinnings of the “parenting styles” literature that form the foundation of the research …

    Open Access•Yasemin Kisbu‐sakarya, Berna Akçınar et al.•ARTICLE•Family Relations•2023

  • Emotional, cognitive, and social functioning in children and early adolescents living in post‐armed conflict

Open Access•Gamze Turunç, Yasemin Kisbu‐sakarya et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Psychology•2023

This study examined whether, and to which extent, the associations between conflict intensity and children's and early adolescents' functioning problems were mediated through parental harsh discipline in a post‐armed conflict setting. Data from 9623 Iraqi mothers and their children who participated in UNICEF MICS showed that the associations between conflict intensity, parental discipline and child functioning were similar for children and early …

  • Family Cohesion Facilitates Learning-Related Behaviors and Math Competency at the Transition to Elementary School

Wenke Niehues, Yasemin Kisbu‐sakarya et al.•ARTICLE•Early Education and Development•2021

Research Findings: Children differ in their ability to adapt to elementary school. Yet, the family factors that foster a successful transition to elementary school are less well understood. Family cohesion as an indicator of a positive emotional climate within families may play an important role for children’s ability to adapt to school. Thus, using data from the German National Education Panel Study (NEPS), in a 2-year longitudinal study conduct…

  • Developmental change in early language and cognitive skills of institution-reared children as compared to their parent-reared peers

    Open Access•Özlem Sumer-Büyükabacı, Yasemin Kisbu‐sakarya et al.•ARTICLE•Children and Youth Services Review•2021•References: 74

  • Does learning to code influence cognitive skills of elementary school children? Findings from a randomized experiment

Open Access•Meryem Şeyda Özcan, Esra Çetinkaya et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 62

BackgroundCoding has been added to school curricula in several countries, being one of the necessary competencies of the 21st century. Although it has also been suggested to foster the development of several cognitive skills such as computational thinking and problem-solving, studies on the effects of coding are very limited, provide mixed results, and lack causal evidence.AimThis study aims to evaluate the impact of a learn-to-code programme on …

  • Adapting the values affirmation intervention to a multi-stereotype threat framework for female students in STEM

    Open Access•Esra Çetinkaya, Sarah D Herrmann et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology of Education•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 17

  • Bias, Type I Error Rates, and Statistical Power of a Latent Mediation Model in the Presence of Violations of Invariance

    Open Access•Margarita Olivera‐Aguilar, Margarita Olivera-Aguilar et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2018

When testing a statistical mediation model, it is assumed that factorial measurement invariance holds for the mediating construct across levels of the independent variable X. The consequences of failing to address the violations of measurement invariance in mediation models are largely unknown. The purpose of the present study was to systematically examine the impact of mediator noninvariance on the Type I error rates, statistical power, and rela…

  • Narcissism and United States’ culture

Joshua D Miller, Jessica Maples et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2015•References: 7

The issue of Americans' levels of narcissism is subject to lively debate. The focus of the present research is on the perception of national character (PNC) of Americans as a group. In Study 1, American adults (N = 100) rated Americans as significantly more narcissistic than they perceived themselves and acquaintances. In Study 2, this finding was replicated with American college students (N = 322). PNC ratings of personality traits and externali…

  • The Distribution of the Product Explains Normal Theory Mediation Confidence Interval Estimation

    Yasemin Kisbu‐sakarya, Yasemin Kisbu-Sakarya et al.•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•2014

The distribution of the product has several useful applications. One of these applications is its use to form confidence intervals for the indirect effect as the product of 2 regression coefficients. The purpose of this article is to investigate how the moments of the distribution of the product explain normal theory mediation confidence interval coverage and imbalance. Values of the critical ratio for each random variable are used to demonstrate…

  • Inhibitory control effects in adolescent binge eating and consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and snacks

  • A Monte Carlo Comparison Study of the Power of the Analysis of Covariance, Simple Difference, and Residual Change Scores in Testing Two-Wave Data

    Open Access•Yasemin Kisbu‐sakarya, Yasemin Kisbu-Sakarya et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2013

This study compares the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), difference score, and residual change score methods in testing the group effect for pretest–posttest data in terms of statistical power and Type I error rates using a Monte Carlo simulation. Previous research has mathematically shown the effect of stability of individual scores from pretest to posttest, reliability, and nonrandomization (i.e., pretest imbalance) on the performance of the AN…
