Highlighting the strengths of regional and rural children in early mathematics education
Reported educational disparities persist in mathematics performance, with children from regional and rural areas consistently scoring lower on standardised academic tests than their metropolitan peers. However, spatial skills may represent an untapped reservoir of strength for children often identified as disadvantaged in formal educational contexts. In a large-scale, naturalistic study, 742 pre-school children (aged 3.5–4.5 years) from metropoli…
The design and use of a digital tool to support the development of preschool children’s logical reasoning
This article describes the conceptual development of a learning app, “Representations”, developed for preschool children (4–5 years of age). In this article we analyze how the app supported the development of logical reasoning via a variety of decoding, encoding, conditionals and debugging activities, which were supported in the game play by the children’s own user generated content (UGC). Research such as this is important as logical reasoning i…

Spatial reasoning, mathematics, and gender
BACKGROUND: The role of gender in both spatial and mathematics performance has been extensively studied separately, with a male advantage often found in spatial tasks and mathematics from adolescence. Spatial reasoning is consistently linked to mathematics proficiency, yet despite this, little research has investigated the role of spatial orientation and gender in the relationship between spatial reasoning and mathematics. AIMS: In the present st…
Visuospatial training improves elementary students' mathematics performance
BackgroundAlthough spatial ability and mathematics performance are highly correlated, there is scant research on the extent to which spatial ability training can improve mathematics performance.AimsThis study evaluated the efficacy of a visuospatial intervention programme within classrooms to determine the effect on students' (1) spatial reasoning and (2) mathematics performance as a result of the intervention.SampleThe study involved grade six s…
Navigating and decoding dynamic maps
A survey ( n = 410) revealed statistically significant gender differences between middle school students' preference for playing particular types of games. Subsequent instrumental case studies theorised the "within-game" and "out-of-game" experiences of two middle school students as they played a digital hand-held game. These two case studies comprised stimulated recall sessions and subsequent follow-up, open-ended interviews. The analysis descri…
Both ways strong
Engaging Aboriginal learners in the school curriculum can be quite a challenge given issues of cultural and linguistic differences. Even more so, these differences can be expanded when the students are in their adolescence. Creating learning environments that engage learners, while providing deep learning opportunities, is one of the biggest challenges for teachers in remote communities. This paper reports on a reform initiative that centred on t…
