An Exploratory Investigation of Undergraduate Students' Values and Experiences with Breaks, Leisure, and Rest
In the face of worsening college student mental health, calls for greater rest and leisure are abundant. However, without an understanding of student attitudes and experiences with rest, improved mental health through rest are limited. The current study surveyed this critical context in 280 college students across two institutions by examining their attitudes, challenges, and experiences with rest. Results showed students report valuing rest as i…
Generating mathematical strategies shows evidence of a serial order effect
This study investigated whether performance on a mathematical strategy-generating task showed evidence for a serial order effect (decreasing fluency but increasing originality and creativity of strategies over time). One-hundred and fifty-five undergraduate students generated as many strategies as they could to solve a three-digit subtraction problem for 8 min, and the resulting strategies were evaluated using fluency and originality indexes that…
Status in a psychological statistics class
Great effort has been invested in increasing STEM achievement among students, but feelings of low status among underrepresented or otherwise vulnerable students may be creating additional challenges. The present study assessed how perceptions of social status within the classroom—termed subjective social status—aligned with objective course performance and differed by sex, first-generation status, work status, and race/ethnicity among 713 student…
Impacts of the Covid-19 Transition to Remote Instruction for University Students
In March 2020, 234 students (77.50% female; 63.09% second-year, 28.33% third-year) enrolled in a psychological statistics course at a public university described their experiences during the first week of the COVID-19-related transition to remote instruction. Qualitative responses indicated 13 common concerns including financial, housing, and food insecurity; social life concerns; distress; sleep difficulties; and academic problems. Students with…
Examining relations between math anxiety, prior knowledge, hint usage, and performance of math equivalence in two different online learning contexts
Mathematical Creativity in Elementary School Children
Research from the general field of creativity demonstrates that in the realm of problem-solving, breaks from the task at hand, known as incubation breaks, can improve idea generation and creative thinking. This study investigated whether a brief incubation break during a mathematical strategy generation task could improve elementary students’ ability to generate strategies and think more creatively. Over 200 elementary school students (grades 1–5…
The Better Book Approach for Education Research and Development
Background/Context Despite advances in the learning sciences, a persistent gap remains between research and practice. Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus of Study In this project, we develop and try out a new approach to education research and development in which researchers, designers/ developers, and instructors collaborate to continuously improve an online interactive textbook. Intervention/Program/Practice Using a “learn by doing” stra…
The mathematical flexibility of college students
BACKGROUND: Traditional math instruction that emphasizes procedures and rote memorization is common in math classes, particularly within the United States. Students may be able to perform steps and recite information, but flexible thinking in math is also an important ability. Lay theories assume that extensive experience in math would lead to increased flexibility, but some research has posited a change-resistant account, which argues that exper…
Math Anxiety
Mathematics anxiety is a pervasive issue in education that requires attention from both educators and researchers to help students reach their full academic potential. This review provides an overview of past research that has investigated the association between math anxiety and math achievement, factors that can cause math anxiety, characteristics of students that can increase their susceptibility to math anxiety, and efforts that educators can…
