Determinants of Healthy and Active Ageing in Korea
Based on a framework developed by the World Health Organization, we construct an individual-level percentage measure of healthy and active ageing employing the results of a unique survey of ten thousand elderly Korean respondents conducted in 2020 and relate its values to the senior respondent's physical, lifestyle, and socio-economic characteristics. We find that the median value of our healthy and active ageing index is approximately 40%, sugge…
A Spatial Analysis of the Voting Patterns in the South Korean General Elections of 2016
In this study we analyze the spatial patterns in the South Korean voting behavior in the context of the 2016 general election along with the socio-economic determinants of the South Korean voters' choice. To this end we applied spatial econometric analysis to a unique dataset on the outcomes of the 2016 general elections in South Korea at a highly disaggregate level of 229 provinces. Our empirical model accounts for three types of spatial depende…
Women Representing Women: The Case of South Korea
This study investigates the question of whether the increased descriptive representation of women in the Korean National Assembly (KNA) is making for a substantial difference in the women s actual legislative success. Employing the National Assembly Bill Information System data this study examines the extent to which women legislators introduced and passed gender-related bills in the KNA over one and a half decades between 2000 and 2016. Our resu…
Changes in and Continuity of Regionalism in South Korea
We use spatial econometrics on a unique data set covering 229 Korean regions to analyze the outcome of Korea’s 2017 presidential election. We see strong statistical evidence of spatial correlation, suggesting that neighboring regions vote similarly, which is in accord with findings in the international context. Our findings are distinct in that we see little evidence that Korea’s 2017 outcome was driven by the economic disparities between the sou…
Silver Generation’s Counter-Movement in the Information Age: Korea’s Pro-Park Rallies
This paper examines the reasons behind people’s decision to participate in the pro-Park rallies against the impeachment of the former Korean President Park as well as an explosive growth in their participation numbers by focusing on the view of these rallies as the silver generation’s counter-movement characterized by an unconventional, short-term collective contentiousness. The empirical findings of this study are based on the field survey data …
The Women's Movement in South Korea Revisited
Using unique survey data collected in 2000 and 2010 and a novel approach to the study of women's movement, this study examines the extent to which the women's movement has persisted and/or changed over the past decade in South Korea. The core emphasis of the paper is on whether Korean women's organizations have changed mobilization repertoires that are important for movement formation, and if so, how and why. The findings indicate two things. Fir…
Ratification of a Free Trade Agreement: The Korean Legislature's Response to Globalisation

In particular, it explores how the Korean National Assembly reacts to the challenge of globalisation as well as how a state develops its capacity to deal with transnational issues. By analysing the National Assembly's response to the ongoing issues of the Korea-Chile and Korea-USA Free Trade Agreements, this article points out the causes of the im…
The Paradox of North Korea's Ideological Radicalism: Shaky Social Basis of Strengthening Ideological Campaigns
IntroductionNorth Korea, the most isolated state in the world, regards itself as a dynasty and embraces a unique ruling ideology. The political leader has absolute power over the entire society.Events that occur in the country often make no sense to outs…
