Project-based learning (PjBL) is used in classrooms around the world. During PjBL projects, students develop shared beliefs about the capabilities of their groups (collective efficacy) and fellow group members (proxy efficacy). Currently, knowledge about how these shared beliefs are associated with the performances of PjBL groups is limited. The central question addressed in this study concerns what role do collective efficacy and proxy efficacy …
Integrating cognitive load theory with other theories, within and beyond educational psychology
Background and AimsThe long-standing aim of cognitive load theory (CLT) has been to generate instructional design principles that show teachers how to instruct students effectively, based on knowledge of the intricacies of human cognitive architecture. Historically, the focus of CLT has been on identifying cognitive processes related to learning and instruction. However, the theory has become more multidisciplinary over time, drawing on theoretic…
The influence of technology acceptance, academic self-efficacy, and gender on academic achievement through online tutoring
The study focused on variables which were posited to capture undergraduate students' experiences with a large-scale online tutoring service, and relationships with the students’ perceptions of their academic capabilities and academic performance. A theoretical model incorporating variables from research on Technology Acceptance and Social Cognitive Theory was developed and tested. A total of 365 undergraduate students from a university located in…

There are important efforts being made to revitalise Aboriginal languages in Australia, which are both pedagogically and culturally appropriate. This research seeks to expand the current knowledge of the effectiveness of gesturing as a teaching strategy for young children learning the Gathang language. An experimental method was used to investigate the effectiveness of gesture by employing a context in which other variables (e.g., other teaching …
Project-based learning groups of friends and acquaintances
This school-based study explored the role of collective and proxy efficacy beliefs in the performances of project-based learning teams comprising friends and acquaintances. Participants were 162 male students in Grade 8 who attended a Catholic high school, located in Sydney, Australia. Students were organized into 20 acquaintance groups and 21 friendship groups. Each group comprised 4 students who were completing project-based learning assignment…
Using factor analysis to validate a questionnaire to explore self-regulation in learner-generated digital media (LGDM) assignments in science education
This research is a validation study of a survey instrument to assess student self-regulation which aims to fill a methodological gap by capturing self-regulation processes while completing learner-generated digital media (LGDM) assignments. For this purpose, the study developed and validated a self-regulation learning questionnaire. Data were gathered from seven science subjects (Years 1 to 3, n = 341) which used LGDM assignments during Semester …
Exploring intentional use of a technological proxy, Turnitin, to enhance student academic literacy practices
Current pedagogical practices have seen the rapid spread of technological tools that carry out tasks on behalf of the learner; we use the term technological proxy to refer to these tools. A popular technological proxy used by students worldwide is a text-matching software called Turnitin. Turnitin alerts users to sections of an assignment that appear to match materials that exist in some other published or previously submitted form. This paper re…
