  • Face and voice identity matching accuracy is not improved by multimodal identity information

    Open Access•Harriet M J Smith, Kay L Ritchie et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2025•References: 62

Identity verification from both faces and voices can be error‐prone. Previous research has shown that faces and voices signal concordant information and cross‐modal unfamiliar face‐to‐voice matching is possible, albeit often with low accuracy. In the current study, we ask whether performance on a face or voice identity matching task can be improved by using multimodal stimuli which add a second modality (voice or face). We find that overall accur…

  • Evaluating earwitness identification procedures

    Open Access•Harriet M J Smith, Jens Roeser et al.•ARTICLE•Memory•2023

Voice identification parades can be unreliable, as earwitness responses are error-prone. In this paper we tested performance across serial and sequential procedures, and varied pre-parade instructions, with the aim of reducing errors. The participants heard a target voice and later attempted to identify it from a parade. In Experiment 1 they were either warned that the target may or may not be present (standard warning) or encouraged to consider …

  • Assessing the Specificity and Accuracy of Accent Judgments by Lay Listeners

    Open Access•Natalie Braber, Harriet M J Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2023•References: 47

Historically, there has been less research carried out on earwitness than eyewitness testimony. However, in some cases, earwitness evidence might play an important role in securing a conviction. This paper focuses on accent which is a central characteristic of voices in a forensic linguistic context. The paper focuses on two experiments (Experiment 1, n = 41; Experiment 2, n = 57) carried out with participants from a wide range of various locatio…

  • Active exploration of faces in police lineups increases discrimination accuracy

    Melissa F Colloff, Heather D Flowe et al.•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•2021•References: 1

Eyewitness identifications play a key role in the justice system, but eyewitnesses can make errors, often with profound consequences. We used findings from basic science and innovative technologies to develop and test whether a novel interactive lineup procedure, wherein witnesses can rotate and dynamically view the lineup faces from different angles, improves witness discrimination accuracy compared with a widely used procedure in laboratories a…

  • Performance of typical and superior face recognizers on a novel interactive face matching procedure

    Open Access•Harriet M J Smith, Sally Andrews et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 59

Unfamiliar simultaneous face matching is error prone. Reducing incorrect identification decisions will positively benefit forensic and security contexts. The absence of view-independent information in static images likely contributes to the difficulty of unfamiliar face matching. We tested whether a novel interactive viewing procedure that provides the user with 3D structural information as they rotate a facial image to different orientations wou…
