Emma Portch, Rachel Moseley et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology & Health•2024

OBJECTIVES: We explore the experiences of people with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (pwME/CFS) during the first UK COVID-19 lockdown period. We specifically probe perceived commonalities and departures in experience between government- and health-imposed lockdowns, application of coping strategies for social isolation, and predictions for inclusion of the chronically ill in post-pandemic society. METHODS AND MEASURES: Thirty …

  • Men and Women as Differential Social Barometers: Gender Effects of Perceived Friend Support on the Neuroticism-Loneliness-Well-Being Relationship in a Younger Adult Population

    Open Access•Julie M Gamble-Turner, Emily Arden Close et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Loneliness and social isolation are well known to have detrimental effects on mental and physical health, and the perception of social support is frequently viewed as a protective factor. We examined the mechanism of loneliness as a mediator of personality on health and moderation of this relationship by perceived social support and gend…

Open Access•Liam Wignall, Emma Portch et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2021•Cited by: 25•References: 4

This study examined self-reported changes in young adults' sexual desire and behaviors during the most significant social restrictions imposed to deal with COVID-19. Drawing on a survey of 565 British adults aged 18-32 collected at the peak of social lockdown restrictions, we document an overall decrease in sexual behaviors consistent with abiding by social restrictions. We found that the levels of sexual desire reported by women (but not men) de…

  • Redefining super recognition in the real world: Skilled face or person identity recognizers

Open Access•Simon Bate, Sarah Bate et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 10

While there has been growing interest in the deployment of superior face recognizers in policing and security settings, it is likely that most real-world tasks tap person rather than face recognition skills. We suggest that changes in real-world screening tasks and terminology are required to distinguish these individuals from laboratory-identified superior face recognizers, who have more potential in developing our theoretical understanding of t…
