On the syntax and semantics of parasitic gaps in relative clauses formed by extraction from noun phrases
This paper examines a particular variety of parasitic gap (PG) in English that appears in relative clauses, licensed by extraction from the relativized NP. I argue that this little-studied construction has several potential implications for linguistic theory, particularly regarding the syntax of nominal phrases. Many works argue that movement is successive-cyclic when exiting phases, which constrain the length of syntactic dependencies. Generally…
The morpho-phonology of an English diminutive
I describe and analyze the morpho-phonology of the English diminutive suffix /-i/, as in doggy, birdie, horsie, and so on. My first goal is to argue that unlike most other diminutives in English this suffix is productive, though subject to a phonological constraint. Specifically, I show that this suffix must be adjacent to a stressed syllable—a requirement that motivates exceptional truncations. I propose that thesefacts provide a clear instance …
The rise of big data and supporting technologies in keeping watch on the world's forests
Technology-driven advances in the gathering, processing and delivery of big data are making it easier to monitor forests and make informed decisions over their use and management. This paper first describes how innovations in remote sensing and cloud computing are enabling generation of geospatial data more often, at lower cost and in more user-friendly formats. Second, it describes the evolution of systems and technologies to trace forest produc…

The Indian Premier League, the Spectacle, and the Illusion of a Nation
The Indian Premier League (IPL) cricketing tournament is a misnomer, issuing images in the name of Indianness while ultimately veiling the country's mass cricketing public. Submitting to a modern-day obsession with spectacle, the IPL stages a highly visual representation of India and its cultural character. Yet, its tactics ultimately work to undermine any valuable cultural potential, in that it relinquishes its capacity as a would-be act of post…
A play is not a journal article
Johnny Saldaña’s (2011) book, Ethnotheatre: Research from Page to Stage, does exactly what it sets out to do: It is a hands-on guide that walks researchers across disciplines step-by-step through interpreting and representing data in an ethnodramatic format. It really is “research from page to stage.” For those with little theatre experience, Saldaña provides excellent suggestions for additional readings and comparisons of different types of play…

Decisions, Dynamics and the Japanese Particle yo
I provide an account of the Japanese sentence-final particle yo within a dynamic semantics framework. I argue that yo is used with one of two intonational morphemes, corresponding to sentence-final rising or falling tunes. These intonational morphemes modify a sentence's illocutionary force head, adding an addressee-directed update semantics to the utterance. The different intonational contours specify whether this update is monotonic or non-mono…
A case study of urban heat islands in the Carolinas
Urbanization tends to aggravate the negative effects of climate. The objective of this research is to aid in the understanding of the spatial variation of urban heat islands within selected cities in North and South Carolina. This understanding will help guide efforts to cool cities in order to increase human comfort, conserve energy and resources, and reduce air pollution in both of these states. Keywords: Urban heat islandsEnvironmental issuesU…
Patients’ perception of information about Haart
The aim of this study was to profile patients' satisfaction with information they have received about HAART in relation to treatment uptake. As part of a prospective investigation into uptake and adherence to HAART, 115 participants, comprising predominantly gay men, completed validated questionnaires investigating their satisfaction with information relating to practical aspects and potential problems of HAART, perceptions of information from di…
Greenland ice sheet elevation change since 1978 from radar and laser altimetry 1
Repeat satellite radar altimetry gives estimates of surface elevation change for the southern half of the Greenland ice sheet between 1978 and 1988, and repeat aircraft laser altimetry gives equivalent estimates for 1993–1998. Over large areas away from the coast, the two data sets show the ice sheet to be in balance, but with localized zones of significant thickening or thinning. Rates of surface elevation change derived by comparing localized 1…
