Mapping cognition across lab and daily life using Experience-Sampling
Understanding cognition in daily life depends on mapping mechanistic accounts from the lab onto real world behaviour. • Applying PCA to experience sampling generated a ‘thought space’ that integrated data from both contexts in an unbiased manner. • The ‘thought space’ effectively organised activities in daily life and tasks in the lab with corresponding features. • Our study shows experience sampling supports richer models of cognition that encom…
I got all sorts of solitude, but that solitude wasn't mine”
This study examines the evolving experiences of “aloneness” in first‐time mothers during their transition to motherhood. While the term is often used to describe new mothers' experiences, it tends to blur distinct yet overlapping constructs such as solitude, loneliness, and social isolation. Study 1 involved qualitative interviews with 22 mothers, revealing three themes: the ambivalent companionship of a baby, the multifaceted nature of post‐moth…
Investigating solitude as a tool for downregulation of daily arousal using ecological momentary assessments
OBJECTIVE: This research explored arousal levels as a motivating factor for solitude-seeking. We hypothesized that solitude becomes more desirable when high-arousal emotions were heightened and individual differences in extraversion and neuroticism would moderate this pattern. METHOD: We tracked individuals' hourly experiences throughout a day. We assessed their high-arousal positive (e.g., excitement) and negative emotions (e.g., tension), wheth…
