On the Process-Dependent Nature of Product Creativity: A Commentary on Green et al. (2024)
Exploring intergenerational, intra-generational and transnational patterns of family caring in minority ethnic communities: The example of England and Wales
We investigated family caring using established questions from national surveys of 1,206 adults aged 40+ from six minority ethnic communities in England and Wales. We included in our analysis factors that predisposed caring (age, sex, marital status and household composition) and enabled caring (health, material resources, education, employment and cultural values). In the general population, 15% of adults are family carers. Three groups reported…
Health and social care practitioners' understanding of the problems of people with dementia‐related visual processing impairment
It has been highlighted that health and social care staff need a greater awareness of the needs and problems of those people with young onset dementia in the UK. Symptoms of Alzheimer's disease are relatively well known (memory loss, disorientation, language difficulties and behavioural problems). However, there is less awareness of dementia-related visual processing impairments in Alzheimer's disease, Dementia with Lewy Bodies or rarer dementia …
Researching the financial abuse of individuals lacking mental capacity
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to report on the aspects of an exploratory investigation into the scale and nature of the financial abuse of adults lacking mental capacity. Design/methodology/approach It uses mixed-methods study which comprises of: a review of safeguarding adults’ statistics; analysis of court case findings; classification of types of financial abuse, victims and perpetrators; qualitative exploration of professional views of…
Framing the detection of financial elder abuse as bystander intervention: Decision cues, pathways to detection and barriers to action
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the detection and prevention of elder financial abuse through the lens of a “professional bystander intervention model”. The authors were interested in the decision cues that raise suspicions of financial abuse, how such abuse comes to the attention of professionals who do not have a statutory responsibility for safeguarding older adults, and the barriers to intervention. Design/methodology/approach…
Factors used in the detection of elder financial abuse: A judgement and decision-making study of social workers and their managers
Factors social workers use in practice to detect elder financial abuse are currently unknown. A critical incident technique was applied within a judgement analysis approach to elicit cue use. Only three factors were key to decision-making: who raises concern, the elder’s mental capacity and the nature of the financial anomaly occurring
Creativity and ease of ambiguous figural reversal: Ambiguous figural reversal
Two studies examined the relationships between self-rated and objectively measured creative ability and ease of perceiving alternative interpretations of the ambiguous Duck-Rabbit figure. The studies found empirical support for what has previously been a largely analogical connection between figural reversal and creativity, using both self-rated trait creativity and objectively scored creative productivity. We discuss the hypothesis that executiv…
Verbalization and problem solving: Insight and spatial factors
Two groups of participants attempted eight examples of each of four different problem types formed by combining insight versus non‐insight and verbal versus spatial factors. The groups were given different verbalization instructions viz., Silent ( N = 40) or Direct Concurrent ( N = 40). There were significant differences between insight and non‐insight tasks and between spatial and verbal tasks in terms of solution rates and latencies. Significan…
Divergent thinking: Strategies and executive involvement in generating novel uses for familiar objects
Although the Alternative Uses divergent thinking task has been widely used in psychometric and experimental studies of creativity, the cognitive processes underlying this task have not been examined in detail before the two studies are reported here. In Experiment 1, a verbal protocol analysis study of the Alternative Uses task was carried out with a Think aloud group (N = 40) and a Silent control group (N = 64). The groups did not differ in flue…
Age-of-acquisition, imagery, concreteness, familiarity, and ambiguity measures for 1,944 words
The validity of age-of-acquisition ratings
A number of recent studies have reported that words rated by adults as early acquired are retrieved more rapidly than words rated as later acquired. Age-of-acquisition ratings have been found to be highly reliable, but the validity of the ratings has been little investigated. This paper reports two validation studies. In the first, words were taken from a standardized vocabulary test and rated by naive adult subjects for age-of-acquisition. The a…
