Fatherhood and Reoffending after Release from Prison
Little is known about the link between fatherhood and reoffending among people released from prison. This study examined the association between fatherhood, residential status, and registered reconviction rates using data from a Dutch pre-trial prison cohort sample ( N = 845, 42.5% fathers). The results show that fathers who co-resided with a partner and children 6 months after release from prison were significantly less likely to be reconvicted …
Experiences of fatherhood in prison
Various programmes have been implemented in prisons to strengthen parental involvement and parent–child relationships during imprisonment. In-depth insights into such programmes are limited. This qualitative study compared the experiences of two groups of imprisoned fathers in the Netherlands: fathers who participated in a family approach programme ( N = 10) and fathers in a comparison group ( N = 29). Based on a thematic analysis, four key diffe…
Paternal Imprisonment and Father–Child Relationships
Although father–child relationships (FCRs) are central to children’s experience of paternal imprisonment, few studies address this subject. A systematic review was conducted to synthesize the literature on paternal imprisonment and FCRs. Four academic databases were searched for peer-reviewed studies. Thirty studies were identified. It was found that FCRs most often deteriorate due to paternal imprisonment, but sometimes remain stable or change p…
University students and the normalisation of illicit recreational drug use
The last decades have seen an increase in the use of illicit recreational drugs. In this article we take a detailed look at the current state of normalisation of the three most popular illicit recreational drugs among Dutch university students in the Netherlands (MDMA/Ecstasy, cocaine and amphetamine) by zooming in on five established aspects of normalisation and expanding on one of those aspects: social accomodation, by adding a behavioural subc…
Trajectories of Dynamic Risk Factors During Forensic Treatment
In this study, growth trajectories (from admission until unconditional release) of crime-related dynamic risk factors were investigated in a sample of Dutch forensic patients ( N = 317), using latent growth curve modeling. After testing the unconditional model, three predictors were added: first-time offender versus recidivist, age, and treatment duration. Postanalyses were chi-square difference tests, t tests, and analyses of variance (ANOVAs) t…
Recidivism and predictors of recidivism among female high level persistent offenders after a special court order for persistent offenders in the Netherlands
The Effects of Assertive Community Treatment Including Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment on Nuisance Acts and Crimes in Dual-Diagnosis Patients
Stalking
The current work reviews literature on the nature of stalking. Despite its nebulous nature and differing legal and clinical definitions of stalking, researchers and practitioners are referring to the same phenomenon. Stalking is chronic, consisting of a number of nuisance behaviors that appear consistent over countries and samples. Different categorizations of stalkers and their victims exist, but ex-partner stalkers are a distinctive category wi…
There's no smoke without fire
In a stalking scenario, the prior relationship between and the gender of stalker and victim were systematically manipulated in order to judge culpability and consequences for the persons involved. Written vignettes were presented to 168 participants who responded via seven Likert scales. Stalker-victim relationship had three levels: ex-partner, acquaintance and stranger. In accordance with the 'Just World' hypothesis (Lerner, 1980), the victim wa…
Dissociation-focused Victim Support and Coping with Traumatic Memory
Some victims are highly susceptible to develop traumatic memories. A basic model of traumatic memory and its theoretical implications for coping assistance offered by victim support is outlined. The main focus of victim support from this perspective is to initiate and facilitate a process of dissociation, of disengaging episodic and negative affective memory. Downward comparison based intervention — a subtype of techniques of cognitive restructur…
Detention circumstances in police stations
In 1992 the two police ministers in The Netherlands instated an advisory committee to formulate standards for the quality of detention circumstances in police stations. In 1992 and 1993 extensive and unique research was carried out in 60 Dutch police stations. This article describes the 126 standards that were formulated for detention circumstances in police stations and the degree to what these standards were met by the police stations. The majo…
