Guatemala’s springs
Although Guatemala has long struggled with corruption, recent years have seen growing public activism and collective resistance against entrenched abuses of power. During two critical periods of social unrest, the country displayed a shift in the framing of corruption. This essay focuses on the two periods: the 2015 corruption scandals and the 2023 presidential election. The discourse and social movements that emerge in these moments illustrate a…
Negotiating tensions in organizational social sustainability (OSS)
Sustainability Struggles
In attempting to understand how leading cosmetics brands in Latin America communicate their sustainability initiatives and corporate social responsibility, we ask the following questions: (a) how do social media stakeholders engage with the sustainability content communicated by leading cosmetic brands in Latin America?, (b) what discourses employ these brands to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability?, and (c) what tensions and contradic…
Toward a decolonial American rhetoric
This essay compares scholarly practices across Anglo and Latin America, showing not only a lack of a real dialogue between scholars from the North and the South but also the scarce dialogue among Latin American scholars themselves. In addition, the significant influence of Eurocentrism in Latin American rhetorical studies explains the strong relationship between discourse studies and rhetoric and the shadow of European standpoints in Latin Americ…
Rhetorics of Democracy in the Americas
Rhetorics of Democracy in the Americas
Democracy is venerated in US political culture, in part because it is our democracy. As a result, we assume that the government and institutions of the United States represent the true and right form of democracy, needed by all. This volume challenges this commonplace belief by putting US politics in the context of the Americas more broadly. Seeking to cultivate conversations among and between the hemispheres, this collection examines local polit…

In Search of a Latin American Approach to Organizational Communication
This article presents a critical review of organizational communication scholarship in Latin America to explore its distinctive traits. Combining J. Marques de Melo’s (1999) features of Latin American communication studies with Anglo-American frameworks of organizational communication, it offers a systematic mapping of Latin American organizational communication scholarship by focussing on the major trends of the academic production in peer-revie…
Delinking rhetorics of neoliberalism
We analyze the so-called Socialism of the twenty-first century in which nine South American governments turned to the left over the last 15 years. This South American socialist turn is seen as a delinking from the logics of dependency and pure neoliberalism. To explore the rhetorics that underlie this delinking process, we conducted both a macroanalysis and an intradiscursive rhetorical analysis of the inauguration and most significant speeches o…
Media and the construction of memory
On 29 July 2000, the ninth and 47th fronts of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) stormed the town of Arboleda (Colombia) and bombarded its population. In this massacre, seventeen people died and the town was nearly completely destroyed. Media across the country reported this massacre, and people repudiated the event. This viewpoint article reflects on this particular episode of violence to analyse the role of media in the formation…

Radio and secondary orality
Despite its high levels of consumption, there is little research about the grammar, communicative genres and codes through which radio is produced. This article strives to fulfill this gap in the literature and provides some preliminary ideas and exploratory characteristics about the language of radio. After conducting a rhetorical analysis of the talk radio programme Hora 20, broadcast by a highly consumed Colombian radio station, this article s…
Piggybacking as a media advocacy strategy to increase enrolments in a gender-oriented smoking cessation programme
Argentina is probably moving to the third phase of the smoking epidemic. Female smoking prevalence is expected to increase over the coming years. In Argentina, smoking cessation programmes usually do not provide specific treatment tailored to women. We implemented a 'piggybacking' media strategy with the goal of announcing the opening of the first gender-oriented smoking cessation programme in Argentina. Piggybacking is a well-known media advocac…
