  • Changes in the Patterns and Characteristics of Youth ENDS Use over Time

    Open Access•Stephen R Shamblen, Melissa H Abadi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Research on youth use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) has explored the correlates of initiation and use; however, little is known about the factors that predict continued youth use of ENDS. We used an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) burst design to explore both daily variability within adolescents over a two-week observation period and variability over time two years later (2018 and 2020). The contribution of device character…

  • Socio-temporal contextual and community factors associated with daily exclusive ENDS use and dual use with tobacco cigarettes among adolescent vapers

    Open Access•Melissa H Abadi, Stephen R Shamblen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Results showed that exposure to peers and adults vaping and exposure to ENDS marketing were associated with same day dual use behaviors. And, that adolescents who dual used were motivated to use ENDS because they were easy to conceal. Findings support stricter regulation of ENDS marketing and for smoke-free air laws that include ENDS. In addition, these findings support prioritizing family- and school-based prevention programming that effectively…

  • I don’t know whose mouth has been on this”

Open Access•Sabrina Islam, Kim M Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Early COVID-19 safety protocols urged physical and social distancing, resulting in minimal contact with others. As social contexts are central to vaping among youth, we used semi-structured interviews to describe how youth who vape are making sense of their use practices and adaptations. The qualitative analyses revealed changes in vaping frequency and access, social isolation shaping substance- and product-specific use, and motivations and outco…

  • Peer-Led Training to Reduce Alcohol Misuse and Related Harm among Greek-Affiliated Students

    Melissa H Abadi, Stephen R Shamblen et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2020

Background High-risk alcohol use on college campuses is a significant public health concern, especially among students in fraternities and sororities. Alcohol harm-reduction programs that include protective behavioral strategies (PBSs) provide a promising approach to curb drinking among students, yet results have been inconsistent among high-risk drinkers. Purpose: To evaluate the impact of a harm-reduction, peer-led training program called “Voic…

Open Access•Nicholas C Peiper, Nicholas Peiper et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2020

  • If momma ain't happy with the mentoring relationship, ain't nobody happy with the mentoring relationship

    Open Access•Stephen R Shamblen, Matthew W Courser et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 23

Much evidence exists on whether an individual's perception of a match relationship impacts match strength and length, but relatively less is known about whether parental perceptions of the match (i.e., whether the match is meeting their goals) impacts the length and strength of mentoring relationships. These relationships were examined in a sample of 350 newly formed youth–mentor matches who completed multiple measures of match strength and satis…

  • Negotiating digital spaces in everyday life

    Open Access•Anindita Paul, Kim M Thompson•ARTICLE•First Monday•2018

New developments in digital technology and better and affordable access allow women unprecedented access to information and communication networks — if they are able to use digital technologies to access networks and digital information. This study presents a case study of motivations of women to use information and communication technologies (ICT) in a ubiquitous information environment. This study follows an interpretive paradigm to explore an …

  • Public Funding for Contraception, Provider Training, and Use of Highly Effective Contraceptives

    Kim M Thompson, Kirsten M J Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 15

Objectives. We determined whether public funding for contraception was associated with long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) use when providers received training on these methods. Methods. We evaluated the impact of a clinic training intervention and public funding on LARC use in a cluster randomized trial at 40 randomly assigned clinics across the United States (2011–2013). Twenty intervention clinics received a 4-hour training. Women aged…

  • A Case Study of Collaboration in the Building of China's Library and Information Infrastructure

    Zhixian Yi, Kim M Thompson•ARTICLE•Information & Culture•2015

The building of a nation's library and information infrastructure relies upon more than books and computers, libraries, and other information centers. Although literacy and information technologies have long existed as part of China's infrastructure, the social ideal of widespread access to information is remarkably recent and has largely been influenced by library collaboration and cooperation with other nations. Using a tripartite information a…

  • Gender differences in Afghan drug-abuse treatment

    Melissa H Abadi, Stephen R Shamblen et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2014•References: 1

Results provide preliminary evidence for potential treatment success of women-tailored DAT programming in Afghanistan. Results also indicate that DAT appears to be successful among Afghan men; however, lower positive outcomes for men when compared to women suggest that more efforts should focus on tailoring DAT programming to the specific needs of Afghan men as well. Study limitations are addressed, and important policy implications are discussed

  • An Exploratory Study of 2 Parenting Styles and Family Health Behaviors

Emma Sterrett, Emma M Sterrett et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2013

This study indicates that family-oriented nutrition and physical activity programs may benefit from including a focus on decreasing laissez-faire parenting, as well as helping overweight parents reduce their BMIs

  • Counseling for IUDs and Implants

Open Access•Kim M Thompson, Marsha Gelt et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Sexual and…•2013•Cited by: 1

Even in clinics that specialize in reproductive health care, health educators are less likely than clinicians to apply current evidence-based criteria in counseling about LARC. To provide evidence-based contraceptive counseling, health educators need training on LARC eligibility and indications

  • Postabortion Contraception

    Open Access•Jessica E Morse, Lori R Freedman et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Sexual and…•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Despite evidence about the safety and cost-effectiveness of postabortion LARC provision, many clinics are not offering it because of financial and logistical concerns, resulting in missed opportunities for preventing repeat unintended pregnancies

  • Object seeking and object loss

Kim M Thompson, Kim Thompson•ARTICLE•Smith College Studies in Social…•2003•References: 2

Theories of object loss and mourning stretch back to the beginning of psychoanalysis itself. This essay explores, through a case vignette, psychoanalytic ideas (Freud, Fairbairn, Loewald) as they relate to the treatment of a patient who is terminally ill. The author argues for practice that is dynamic in nature when treating a terminally ill patient, so that the work of mourning bodily and relational losses can take place in a context of meaning …

Two conversations with three aging lesbians are presented to identify and explore different definitions of beauty and how these definitions change and are influenced by age. The three women interviewed believe beauty is more than skin deep, yet they differ regarding specific components of beauty. Two believe that their definition of beauty has changed as they age and one believes that her definition has remained basically unchanged through the ye…
