Associations between the perceived educational environment and burnout symptoms across multilingual medical programs
Response conflicts in visually guided movements under mental fatigue
Mental fatigue induced by prolonged task performance (time-on-task [ToT]) is typically perceived as an unpleasant state and is associated with compromised performance. Operations requiring cognitive control, such as resolving response conflicts, are particularly sensitive to ToT-related detrimental effects. As cognitive control is critical for precise movements, ToT likely impacts movement performance. Two experiments explored this by examining t…
Motivation to join and supportive activity within online health communities among patients with persistent pain
Online Health Communities (OHCs) are key platforms for people seeking medical information and social support. Individuals with persistent pain often use these communities to better understand their condition, share experiences, and receive emotional or informational help, yet the psychological and social factors shaping participation remain underexplored. This study examined motivations for joining OHCs and levels of supportive activity, focusing…
Attitudes toward AI in health- and non-health-related contexts
As artificial intelligence (AI) systems increasingly permeate healthcare and daily life, understanding the factors that shape attitudes toward their use is crucial. This study examined how individuals' general attitudes toward AI and their willingness to use AI-based tools in specific situations vary, and how these relate to mood, pain-related affective traits, and perceived social support. A total of 302 participants completed self-report measur…
Negative time perspective predicts the self-perceived affective and physical components of pain independently from depression, anxiety, and early life circumstances
People's attitudes toward time, the time perspectives (TPs) rooted in past experiences, might be crucial for the emotional evaluation of life events, such as painful situations. In a survey-based study (N = 353), we investigated the relationship of TPs with the self-perceived affective and physical aspects of pain. Specifically, we hypothesised that past-negative TP would be associated with a negative emotional appraisal of pain characterised by …
Pain catastrophizing, pain sensitivity and fear of pain are associated with early life environmental unpredictability
The findings converged on the conclusion that individuals experiencing disadvantageous early life conditions tended to have an elevated level of pain catastrophizing, higher perceived sensitivity to pain, and higher level of pain-related fear. These associations were mediated by an unpredictability schema and body awareness
Disentangling the facilitating and hindering effects of threat-related stimuli - A visual search study
Although large body of research has demonstrated the attention-grabbing nature of threat-related stimuli, threat could also facilitate attentional processes. Previous studies suggest a linear relationship between the facilitating effect of the arousal level conveyed by threat and performance on visual search tasks. Due to the temporal competition bias favouring stimuli with higher arousal level, this could be more pronounced for shorter onset tim…
The Mediating Role of the Dark Triad Between Life History Strategy and Perceived Stress Factors
Life History Theory posits early-life adversities affect personality development partway through sensitizing individuals to certain environmental cues, thus influencing the person’s responses to different stressors. We therefore hypothesized that life history strategy affects perceived distress and self-efficiency in coping through certain personality traits. The concept of the Dark Triad describes specific forms of personalities found to be asso…
Association of Exercise Capacity with Physical Functionality and Various Aspects of Fatigue in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease
The aim of this study was to examine associations between exercise capacity-indexed as the metabolic equivalent of the task-and various aspects of subjective fatigue, physical functionality, and depression in patients with coronary artery disease. A cross-sectional design was used. Patients with stable coronary artery disease (N = 240) underwent an exercise stress test and completed self-report assessments of depression, subjective physical limit…
