Reorienting Kokugo
This study investigates how the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) framework for reading literacy has been interpreted and adapted within Kokugo (Japanese language) curriculum, particularly through the integration of cultural literacy. Through qualitative document and textbook analysis, the study demonstrates that Japan’s Language Culture course in the Kokugo curri…
Spatial distribution of tuberculosis incidence in Los Angeles County
This study highlights areas of high TB incidence within Los Angeles County both for U.S.-born cases and for cases born in Mexico, Vietnam or the Philippines. Tuberculosis progression rates in U.S. Immigrants following screening with interferon-gamma release assays
Among high-risk immigrants without active tuberculosis disease at the time of entry into the United States, risk of progression to active tuberculosis disease was higher in IGRA-positive participants compared with IGRA-negative participants. However, these findings did not reach statistical significance, and a positive IGRA at enrollment had a poor predictive value for progressing to active tuberculosis disease. Additional research is needed to i…
Comfort Women' Denial and the Japanese Right
It is a remarkable thing to behold, the extent to which the issue of "comfort women" galvanizes the Japanese right more than two decades after the first Korean survivor appeared in public. The hopeful moments of the Kono Statement (1993) and the Murayama Statement (1995) seem to belong to a remote past. Circumscribed though they were, those official statements by the then chief cabinet secretary (Kono Yohei) and prime minister (Murayama Tomiichi)…
Former Fukushima Governor Sato Eisaku Blasts Meti -Tepco Alliance
The explosion at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has become an earthshaking situation, severely damaging the surrounding area. In addition, highly radioactive ocean water has been detected nearby. Sato Eisaku (佐藤栄佐久 age 71), who at one point brought 17 nuclear power plants operated by the Tokyo Power Electric Company (TEPCO) to a halt, is indignant about the situation: "The root of all evil is the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry…
