Sugar consumption in Aboriginal children explored from a social practice perspective
Australian Aboriginal children have higher sugar intake and are disproportionately affected by sugar-related diseases such as obesity, diabetes and dental caries than non-Aboriginal children. The intention of this paper was to highlight the need for approaches that can capture the complexity of health practices without reducing them to either individual choice or structural determination. We explore sugar consumption in Aboriginal children from a…
Making oral heath everyone’s business”- Integrating Oral Health into Primary Care
Background summary: Oral health care is important for overall health and well-being, but its significance is currently underemphasised across health settings due to various barriers encountered by health care providers and consumers. Where the Mind Meets the Mouth – an integrated and collaborative health care approach
Background: The majority of the cost of oral health care in Australia is borne by individuals, hence many miss out on early, cost-effective care. 63,000 Australians are hospitalised annually for preventable oral conditions. Current approaches separate the provision of oral from general health care. Australia’s National Oral Health Plan recognises oral health as everyone’s business and a role for health care workers and carers to intervene early i…

Splash: A prospective birth cohort study of the impact of environmental, social and family-level influences on child oral health and obesity related risk factors and outcomes
This research will provide a unique contribution to integrated health, education and social policy and program directions, by providing clearer policy relevant evidence on strategies to counter social and environmental factors which predispose infants and children to poor health, wellbeing and social outcomes; and evidence-based strategies to promote health and prevent disease through the adoption of healthier lifestyles and diet. Further, given …
Provision of oral health care to adult patients by dental therapists without the prescription of a dentist
Feedback from patients and dentists indicated that, following the completion of an educational bridging program, dental therapists with a university education were able to develop the knowledge and skills required to treat adult patients aged 26+ years without the prescription or supervision of a dentist. Enabling dental therapists to treat adult patients may have a role to play in improving access to dental care for underserved populations
The VicGeneration study - a birth cohort to examine the environmental, behavioural and biological predictors of early childhood caries: Background, aims and methods
There is currently a lack of research describing the natural history of early childhood caries in very young children, or exploring the interactions between risk and protective factors that extend to include contemporary measures of socio-behavioural factors. This study will generate knowledge about pathways, prevalence and preventive opportunities for early childhood caries, the most prevalent child health inequality
