  • Characterization of HIV risks in a Brazilian sickle cell disease population

Open Access•Paula Fraiman Blatyta, Shannon Kelly et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Besides the risk of transfusion-transmitted HIV, which is now exceedingly rare, SCD and non-SCD participants demonstrated similar HIV risk behaviors. Causes other than risk behaviors such as factors inherent to SCD pathophysiology may explain the reported low prevalence of HIV in SCD

  • Geographic distribution of human T-lymphotropic virus types 1 and 2 among mothers of newborns tested during neonatal screening, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Open Access•Maísa Aparecida Ribeiro, Fernando Augusto Proietti et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2010

To our knowledge this was the first time that neonatal screening for HTLV-1/2 was performed in Brazil. This model could be used in other areas with high HTLV-1/2 prevalence rates. The detection of carrier mothers can enable intervention measures, such as providing infant formula to newborns, to be implemented expeditiously to reduce vertical transmission

  • HCV and HIV infection and co-infection

Open Access•Keli Bahia Felicíssimo Zocratto, Waleska Teixeira Caiaffa et al.•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Saude Publica•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 23

This study aimed to characterize sexual and drug-use behaviors in injecting drug users (IDUs) in relation to single hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and HCV/HIV co-infection. The sample consisted of 272 IDUs enrolled in the AjUDE-Brasil I Project, a cross-sectional multi-center study conducted in five Brazilian cities in 1998. Data were collected with a structured questionnaire using self-reported risk beha…

  • The contribution of two Brazilian multi-center studies to the assessment of HIV and HCV infection and prevention strategies among injecting drug users

Open Access•Waleska Teixeira Caiaffa, Francisco I Bastos et al.•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Saude Publica•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 11

This study assessed 1,144 Brazilian injecting drug users (IDUs) recruited on the street through outreach syringe exchange programs by two multi-center cross-sectional studies: 287 IDUs were recruited during the AjUDE-Brasil I Project and 857 during the AjUDE-Brasil II Project. IDU characteristics related to drug use and sexual behavior, and legal and health conditions for the two studies were compared, using decision tree and logistic regression …

  • Heterogeneous geographic distribution of human T-cell lymphotropic viruses I and II (HTLV-I/II)

    Open Access•Bernadette Catalan-Soares, Anna Bárbara De F Carneiro-Proietti et al.•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Saude Publica•2005•Cited by: 10•References: 19

Brazil may have the highest absolute number of HTLV-I/II seropositive individuals in the world. Screening potential blood donors for HTLV-I/II is mandatory in Brazil. The public blood center network accounts for about 80.0% of all blood collected. We conducted a cross-sectional study to assess the geographic distribution of HTLV-I/II serological screening prevalence rates in blood donors from 27 large urban areas in the various States of Brazil, …

The observed prevalence rates suggest there is familial aggregation of human T-cell lymphotropic virus infection. The main transmission mode was horizontal (sexual). It is important to identify the presence of the virus in family members of infected individuals, even if they are asymptomatic. Doing so may lead to a better understanding of how the virus spreads and more efficient measure for preventing disease transmission
