Politicisation and polarisation of health during Covid-19
This article explores how public health information was contested on social media during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through digital ethnography of four Finnish alternative health influencers, we examine their role in politicising and polarising health attitudes and pandemic governance, and how these dynamics evolved from the early to later stages of the crisis. Drawing on social media content from three key periods – early pandemic (January–June 2020…
I don't know if there's a happy ending to this story
Prostate cancer, the most common cancer among Finnish men, has a high survival rate. Treatment options vary from active surveillance to radical treatments, with potential long-term or permanent side effects. Traditional cancer narratives frame cancer as a tragedy or a hero story and thus fail to capture the chronic nature of prostate cancer and its impacts on patients' lives. This study analyses the narratives of 22 prostate cancer patients, inte…
Perceptions of three diets varying in animal- and plant-based protein contents
The market for new plant protein-based meat substitutes is expanding, although their consumption remains limited compared to animal-based protein sources. Further research is necessary to comprehend the perceptions of diets in which animal-based protein sources are partially replaced with plant proteins. This qualitative study is part of an intervention trial, during which participants adhered to one of the three intervention diets for 12 weeks: …
The good, the bad, and the blameless in parenting
These results are in line with previous studies suggesting that in Western cultures obesity - including childhood obesity - is typically seen as the individual's fault and is associated with negative stigma. Consequently, counselling parents in healthcare should be expanded from supporting a healthy lifestyle to strengthening parents' identity as being good enough parents who are already making many health enhancing efforts. Situating the family …
The appeal of alternative diets – stories of carbohydrate-conscious eaters regarding motives, credibility of dietary advice and the authority of experiences
Low-carbohydrate diets promote the idea that reducing carbohydrate intake is a key to a healthier life and more natural way to eat. The proponents of these diets form food communities, which share common ideas about food, put forward their own ‘alternative’ expertise and challenge mainstream dietary advice. This study focuses on the perspectives of self-identified followers of low-carbohydrate diets. We explore their rationales for choosing the d…
Priorities for social science and humanities research on the challenges of moving beyond animal-based food systems
Increasingly high-profile research is being undertaken into the socio-environmental challenges associated with the over-production and consumption of food from animals. Transforming food systems to mitigate climate change and hidden hunger, ensure food security and good health all point to reducing animal-based foods as a key lever. Moving beyond animal-based food systems is a societal grand challenge requiring coordinated international research …

Food out of its usual rut. Carnivalesque online veganism as political consumerism
Food is a profoundly political issue, with themes such as environmental sustainability and ethics becoming increasingly important. These concerns have given rise to a new kind of mobilization around vegetarian and vegan eating in recent years. In-depth analyses of the characteristics of this new wave of veganism are needed. Our study explores how the new forms of carnivalesque and carefree veganism are negotiated with the older aims of veganism a…
Representing the ‘Voice’ of Patients
The growing prominence of patient and public involvement in health services has led to the increased use of experiential knowledge alongside medical and professional knowledge bases. Third sector organisations, which position themselves as representatives of collective patient groups, have established channels to communicate experiential knowledge to health services. However, organisations may interpret and communicate experiential knowledge in d…

Using the critical incident technique for qualitative process evaluation of interventions
The CIT seems a promising approach for directing analysis towards potentially crucial intervention elements as described by the participants themselves, helping in focusing and limiting the text corpus to accounts relevant to change. Qualitative evaluations in trials may add valuable understanding to complement quantitative assessments

Future of sustainable eating? Examining the potential for expanding bean eating in a meat-eating culture
A transition towards more sustainable food consumption requires changes in everyday eating patterns, particularly a substitution of animal protein with plant-based protein sources. However, in many European countries plant protein consumption is low compared to meat consumption. The article explores plant protein consumption frequencies, future intentions to increase bean consumption, and the associations of frequent bean eating with socioeconomi…

This paper investigates how the genetic screening programme was launched, the problems it encountered and the circumstances of its closure. The present analysis focuses on the co-existence of, and tensions betwee…

However, there were some aspects that were not so well known. Most difficult issues contained specialized terms such as “chromo…

Ethics of clinical genetics
As research on and applications of human genetics expanded remarkably during the 1990s, claims were increasingly raised that genetics and its applications should also be considered from an ethical viewpoint. Here medical ethics is the subject of sociological analysis. The paper examines how medical ethics gradually became part of the argumentation and practices of genetic counselling and screening during three decades (1970-2000) by analysing scr…
