  • Clinical Epidemiology

    Open Access•Brendan Barrett, Patrick S Parfrey et al.•BOOK•Clinical Epidemiology•2021

  • Instrument Refinement

Open Access•J Creina Twomey, Christine Y Way et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2017

The objective of this study is to refine the Patient’s Perception of Hemodialysis Scale and data quality and refine the Patient’s Perception of Life on Hemodialysis Scale (PPHS). Collecting data from a convenient sample ( N = 236), data were collected and a cross-sectional design survey design was used. Item inclusion was based on the item’s theoretical underpinning, examination of data quality, findings from a multi-trait/multi-item correlation …

    Open Access•Patrick S Parfrey, Brendan J Barrett•BOOK•Clinical Epidemiology•2015

  • Community engagement with genetics

Open Access•Holly Etchegary, Jane Green et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2015

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of molecular biology and genomics continues to expand rapidly, promising numerous opportunities for improving health. However, a key aspect of the success of genomic medicine is related to public understanding and acceptance. DESIGN: Using community consultations and an online survey, we explored public attitudes and expectations about genomics research. RESULTS: Thirty-three members of the general public in Newfoundland, Ca…

  • Development and preliminary testing of the psychosocial adjustment to hereditary diseases scale

    Open Access•Katherine E Watkins, Kathy E Watkins et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2013

Preliminary testing suggests that the PAHD is a psychometrically sound scale capable of assessing psychosocial adjustment. We conclude that the PAHD may be a valuable monitoring tool to identify individuals and families who may require therapeutic interventions

  • Safety and Criteria for Selective Use of Low-Osmolality Contrast for Cardiac Angiography

    Brendan J Barrett, Patrick S Parfrey et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1998•References: 25

OBJECTIVES: Recommendations to restrict low-osmolality contrast to high-risk patients having cardiac angiography have been challenged because of safety and uncertainty about selection criteria. The authors document frequency and severity of adverse events with diagnostic cardiac angiography under the influence of guidelines for selective use of low-osmolality contrast in high-risk patients and refine high-risk criteria. METHODS: Subjects of this …

  • Patients' Perceptions of their Experiences with ESRD and Hemodialysis Treatment

    Open Access•Deborah M Gregory, Christine Y Way et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•1998•Cited by: 4•References: 26

A grounded theory methodology was used to explore patients' experiences with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and hemodialysis. The emerging theory suggests that a "new sense of self" is an emotional/psychological state that fluctuates with the evolving meanings of ill-ness and treatment and perceived quality of supports. The findings indicate that when con-fronted with this new way of being in the world, the individual becomes cognizant of an unce…
