Exploring factors influencing willingness of older adults to use assistive technologies
Technology is widely promoted as a solution to greater independence and better health for the rapidly growing UK older population. If this is to be realised, we need to understand barriers and facilitators to uptake and investigate who wants this technology and who does not express an interest in use. This analysis is based on data from a population-based cohort study, the Cognitive Function and Ageing Study (CFAS)-II, which focused on brain heal…
Stress, depression, and anxiety
Early perimenopausal women experienced the highest level of stress and were more severely bothered by feelings of depression and anxiety, with the poorest overall self-reported psychosocial quality of life. Post-menopausal women, however, reported to have similar experiences as premenopausal women. Age explained the associations between menopausal stage, stress and anxiety, but not between depression and different menopausal stages. Resilience an…
Vulnerable, Heroic … or Invisible? Representations Versus Realities of Later Life in Indonesia
Indonesia, like many rapidly ageing lower-middle-income countries (LMICs), tends to portray older citizens as ‘vulnerable’ and ‘dependent’; yet the country has few public policies to support them. To this discourse, an alternative stereotype is emerging, influenced by notions of ‘successful ageing’, which promotes models of older people as healthy and contributing to families and the nation state. In this article, we argue that both stereotypes i…
Know-Me
Personalisation is a crucial element in providing person-centred care for people with dementia. This paper presents the development and evaluation of a design toolkit to facilitate the work of designers and healthcare professionals in personalising dementia care. This toolkit, named "Know-me", was grounded in the findings of Ergonomics in Aging, Co-design, and Data-enabled Design, derived from literature review and from the field during a four-ye…
Dementia and Dependency vs. Proxy Indicators of the Active Ageing Index in Indonesia
Dementia prevalence is increasing worldwide and developing countries are expected to carry the highest burden of this. Dementia has high care needs and no current effective long-term treatment. However, factors associated with active ageing (e.g., longer employment; participation in society; independent, healthy and secure living; and enabling environments to allow people to remain psychosocially and physically active) could help maintain indepen…
Fragilidade física e desempenho cognitivo em populações idosas, parte I
Loneliness, Social Integration, and Incident Dementia Over 6 Years
Dementia risk is associated with loneliness and having fewer close relationships in later life. The underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated, but efforts to enhance older peoples' relationship quality may be relevant to dementia risk
Elderly’s Self-Rated Health Status and Functional Capacity at the District Level in Indonesia
Three Pillars of Active Ageing in Indonesia
This paper aims to contribute to the knowledge of ageing in Indonesia—the fourth most populous country in the world—within the framework of active ageing. Data are from the 2005 Intercensus Population Survey, the first to gather information from older persons aged 60 and above. Findings are organised according to the three pillars of the World Health Organization's Active Ageing framework including health, participation and security. Findings sug…
