  • From typhoons to traders

Open Access•Elizabeth Drury O’neill, Beatrice Crona et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

The majority of the world's fishers, fishworkers and their dependents live in coastal tropical areas that are, and will be, highly exposed to human-induced climate change. Projections indicate such change could result in coastal populations being more frequently and acutely impacted by natural disasters. Increasing aid interventions is a likely knock-on effect of such scenarios. How these external natural and social disturbances interact and affe…

  • Marine Spatial Planning in Asia and the Caribbean

    Open Access•Robert S Pomeroy, Kimberly Baldwin et al.•ARTICLE•Desenvolvimento e Meio Ambiente•2014

  • Rights‐based fisheries governance

    Open Access•Edward H Allison, Blake D Ratner et al.•ARTICLE•Fish and Fisheries•2012

In the last twenty years, policy prescriptions for addressing the global crisis in fisheries have centred on strengthening fisheries governance through clarifying exclusive individual or community rights of access to fishery resources. With a focus on small‐scale developing‐country fisheries in particular, we argue that basing the case for fishery governance reform on assumed economic incentives for resource stewardship is insufficient when there…

  • Applying the ecosystem services concept to poverty alleviation

    Open Access•Tim Daw, Tim M Daw et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Conservation•2011

The concept of ecosystem services (ES), the benefits humans derive from ecosystems, is increasingly applied to environmental conservation, human well-being and poverty alleviation, and to inform the development of interventions. Payments for ecosystem services (PES) implicitly recognize the unequal distribution of the costs and benefits of maintaining ES, through monetary compensation from ‘winners’ to ‘losers’. Some research into PES has examine…

  • Investigating SNPs Flanking the D1S80 Locus in a Tamil Population from India

Kuppareddi Balamurugan, Robert Pomeroy et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2010

D1S80 is a 16-bp variable number of tandem repeats minisatellite. We analyzed single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) flanking this locus in a Tamil population. Alleles ranged from 15 through 41 repeats, with alleles 18 and 24 being predominant with frequencies of 31% and 34.5%, respectively, suggesting a bimodal allelic distribution. All the 18-repeat alleles are associated with HinfI(+) and FnuAHI(-) restriction site polymorphisms at the 5' and …

IUCN, WWF and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have developed this guidebook to assist marine protected area (MPA) managers in assessing the performance of their MPA. Based on this assessment, it shows how necessary changes can be made to improve management measures. It presents a flexible approach that can be used in many types of MPA and offers a variety of specific biological, socio-economic and governance indicato…

  • An input‐output analysis of South Carolina's economy

    Robert S Pomeroy, Muzaffer Uysal et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•1988•Cited by: 3•References: 6

This study presents the results of an input‐output model that was developed using nonsurvey methods for the State of South Carolina, with specific reference being paid to coastal tourism and recreation activities. Of specific interest is how the results of this model, output, income, and employment multipliers can be used for making planning and economic impact assessment decisions related to growth and change as a consequence of these activities…
