  • Manufacturing Consent

    Open Access•Yves Pepermans, Pieter Maeseele•ARTICLE•Science Communication•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 30

This article examines if and how news media contribute to manufacturing consent by disabling ideological disagreement about established social structures underlying climate disruption. A critical discourse analysis reveals three discursive constructions emerging in two Belgian elite newspapers and one alternative news site during four climate summits (2000-2012). Despite advocating different policy approaches based on opposing ideological prefere…

  • Reversed positionality, reversed reality? The multimodal Environmental Justice frame in mainstream and alternative media

Open Access•Renée Moernaut, Jelle Mast et al.•ARTICLE•International Communication Gazette•2017•References: 15

Environmental injustice, the unequal distribution of benefits and burdens, is key to understanding climate change. Yet, mainstream media are criticized for only reproducing anthropocentrism when discussing the concern, while this ideology causes socio-environmental problems. Current research is preoccupied with the verbal mode, while visual and verbal modes always work in tandem. This prevents a full understanding of the problems. Also, most stud…

  • Climate Change Journalism

    Open Access•Yves Pepermans, Pieter Maeseele•ARTICLE•Desenvolvimento e Meio Ambiente•2017•Cited by: 2

  • The politicization of climate change

    Open Access•Yves Pepermans, Pieter Maeseele•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2016•Cited by: 28•References: 13

In the academic literature, two perspectives can be distinguished regarding the climate debate. The dominant consensus‐building perspective problematizes the politicization of climate change as an important barrier to climate action and resultantly sets out to develop depoliticizing communication strategies which foster social consensus and public engagement. In contrast to this, the critical debate perspective problematizes climate change's capt…

  • Democratic Debate and Mediated Discourses on Climate Change

    Yves Pepermans, Pieter Maeseele•ARTICLE•Environmental Communication•2014

Starting from a risk conflicts perspective, this article challenges two common assumptions of existing research on climate change in public and media discourses. It argues that the evaluation of these discourses on the extent to which these either accurately reflect a scientific consensus or contribute to achieving social consensus insufficiently takes account of the exclusionary mechanisms it starts from. A conceptual and empirical framework is …
