  • What drives support for authoritarian populist parties in Eastern and Central Europe

    Open Access•Pamela Irving Jackson, Peter Doerschler•ARTICLE•International Sociology•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 28

Using data from the European Social Survey (2002–2018), we examine the rise of the far right in nine east-central European states in the last half of their third post-communist decade: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, and Slovakia. For many in the region in 2018 religion remained a cornerstone of national identity even as the nation struggled with the institutional demands of democracy in the aftermath of …

  • How Safe Do Majority Group Members, Ethnic Minorities, and Muslims Feel in Multicultural European Societies

Pamela Irving Jackson, Peter Doerschler•ARTICLE•Democracy and Security•2016•Cited by: 10

London elected a Muslim mayor in 2016, less than a year after Germany took the lead in welcoming Syrian refugees. What accounts, then, for political leaders’ public assertions of the death of multiculturalism and the resurgence of far-right parties? We examine the possibility that some areas of multicultural policy foster a sense of discrimination on the part of majority populations and reduce their sense of safety, putting pressure on political …

  • Die Linke: Still an Eastern Cultural Icon

    Peter Doerschler•ARTICLE•German Politics•2015•Cited by: 6

As the self-proclaimed champion of East German regional identity, the former Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) was often viewed as the central political force of a lingering cultural divide in united Germany. Desperate to increase its paltry electoral support among western voters, the PDS merged in 2007 with a band of western leftists to form the Left Party, casting doubt on whether the new party would remain symbolic of regional division. Usin…

  • Benchmarking Muslim well-being in Europe: Reducing disparities and polarizations

Open Access•Pamela Irving Jackson, Peter Doerschler•BOOK•Benchmarking Muslim Wellbeing In…•2012

This highly topical book aims to undermine unsubstantiated myths by examining Muslim integration in Germany, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, states which dominate the debate on minority integration and the practice of Muslim religious traditions. These nations have a range of alternative relationships between religion and the state, as well as strategies for coordinating individuals' ethnic and state identities. Using the European…

  • Host Nation Language Ability and Immigrant Integration in Germany: Use of GSOEP to Examine Language as an Integration Criterion

Peter Doerschler, Pamela Irving Jackson•ARTICLE•Democracy and Security•2010•Cited by: 1

Civic integration contracts in western European states developed in a context of high unemployment rates among those of migrant background, European and national efforts to control migration, and the implementation of antiterrorism security measures. Language and cultural education programs are now required for non-Western immigrants to Europe in order to assure their employment and respect for the political and cultural traditions of the host na…

  • Push‐Pull Factors and Immigrant Political Integration in Germany

    Open Access•Peter Doerschler•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2006•Cited by: 8•References: 11

Objectives. Drawing specifically on the German case, I argue that individuals' motivations for immigration, or so‐called push‐pull factors, have a lasting impact beyond the decision to immigrate and, in fact, profoundly influence immigrants' political integration in the host country. Specifically, economic push‐pull factors are likely to impede immigrants' political integration, whereas political push‐pull factors lead immigrants to remain more i…

  • Education and the development of Turkish and Yugoslav immigrants' political attitudes in Germany

    Peter Doerschler•ARTICLE•German Politics•2004•Cited by: 3

A primary challenge facing both immigrants and German society more generally is immigrants' integration into the wider social, economic and political community, including the development of their political attitudes and behaviour in the host country. This paper examines how one aspect of the immigrant experience – individuals' educational experiences – has influenced the development of immigrants' political attitudes and behaviour. Twenty-five in…
