Introduction: Genres, Ideologies and the Kalevala
“Ne [loitsut] kuitenkin piti panna täydellisyyden voittamiseksi siinäkin tarkannossa, että kerto-, laulu, ja loihturunot kun olivat alussa veljeksiä, tässäkin alkuaikain kuvaavassa kokouksessa eivät erouisi” (Borenius and Krohn 1895, 3; They [charms/incantations] had to be included to gain completeness since epic, lyric and charms were like brothers in the beginning, so they would not get separated in this picture of genesis).1 This quotation is …
Fieldwork in Philosophy: Articulating a Theoretical Sensibility
The phrase ‘fieldwork in philosophy’ has its genealogy in the writings of Austin, Bourdieu and Rabinow. In this paper, we follow these authors but take a step forward; we use their phrase for naming a theoretical sensibility that has gained ground in recent years. To develop a systematic articulation of this sensibility, we draw on Foucault, Hacking, Latour, and Mol, whose research characteristically originates from within philosophy but relies o…
The Making of the Good Person: Self-Help, Ethics and Philosophy
This book provides a philosophical assessment of the idea of personhood advanced in popular self-help literature. It also traces, within academic philosophy and philosophical scholarship, a self-help culture where the self is brought forth as an object of improvement and a key to meaning, progress, and profundity. Unlike other academic treatments of the topic of self-help, this book is not primarily concerned with providing a critique of popular …

Murdoch on ethical formation in a changing world
In the past few years, we have seen emerging new work that brings into focus the role of historical change and its moral implications in Iris Murdoch's philosophy. This paper strengthens this reading of her work and investigates the implications of this aspect of Murdoch's thinking for education in general and for moral education in particular. It resituates the Platonic imagery of the individual's ascent towards the true and the good in a framew…

Riimill…
Contextuality, Bioethics, and the Nature of Philosophy: Reflections on Murdoch, Diamond, Walker, and the Groningen Approach
Beginning with Barry Hoffmaster’s charge that we reclaim bioethics from the moral philosopher’s top-down theorizing, I discuss two moral philosophy contexts that offer resources for the kind of complex attention Hoffmaster demands: Iris Murdoch and Cora Diamond in moral philosophy and Margaret Urban Walker, Hilde Lindeman, and Marian Verkerk’s joint take on bioethics. My aim is: 1) to dispel a simplified notion of philosophy in bioethics; 2) to u…
Conflict and moral change: LGBTQ+ rights education, religion and renegotiation
In this paper, I address a complex of challenges around religiously grounded ethical ideas in education, the public sphere and public institutions, focussing on the question of LGBTQ+ rights education and an exemplary conflict over this topic in Birmingham, England, in 2019. I argue that it is important, both theoretically and practically, to approach the issue, not just as a conflict between religious and liberal/secular world views, but also as…
Mikä vernakulaari
Tämän teemanumeron aihe on vernakulaarin käsite.
Miten kansasta tulee vernakulaari
Inconsistency in Ethics
Consistency is usually seen as one of the hallmarks and a cardinal virtue of moral theory, as well as of any defensible real-life moral perspective. In everyday life a consistent set of moral beliefs is conductive to moral clarity, communicability, responsibility and responsiveness. But this is just one side of the story. In this paper I argue that inconsistency, properly understood, is a productive and constructive aspect of both moral philosoph…
Emotional Transpositions: Interpreting Oral Lyric Poetry
In this article I will discuss perceptions of oral lyric poetry as representations of ideals of emotion. I use the Kanteletar, the most important lyric anthology of nineteenth-century Finland, as an example, asking how oral lyric poetry and its emotions have been represented in written form. In translating oral texts into another, written language, we face a double tension, a fidelity both to oral sources and to the readership for the written tra…
Latour's empirical metaphysics
In this article we examine the mode in which Bruno Latour engages in metaphysics in his social scientific and philosophical project. In contrast to Graham Harman's recent reading of his work, we take seriously how adamant Latour is about not creating a metaphysical system, and how he is thus essentially sharing the anti-metaphysical tenor of much of the twentieth-century philosophy. Nonetheless, he does not shun making bold claims concerning the …

Reduce Ourselves to Zero: Sabina Lovibond, Iris Murdoch, and Feminism
In her book Iris Murdoch, Gender and Philosophy , Sabina Lovibond argues that Iris Murdoch's philosophical and literary work is covertly dedicated to an ideology of female subordination. The most central and interesting aspect of her multifaceted argument concerns Murdoch's focus on the individual person's moral self‐scrutiny and transformation of consciousness. Lovibond suggests that this focus is antithetical to the kind of communal and structu…
Why is Aino not Described as a Black Maiden? Reflections on the Textual Presentations by Elias Lönnrot in the Kalevala and the Kanteletar
What kind of tradition is selected to represent the oral tradition of Finland, to whom is this tradition presented, and what process led to its selection? This article discusses the process of textualization for Kalevala-meter oral tradition in nineteenth-century Finland by using one lyric song and its variants as documented and represented by Elias Lönnrot. Emphasizing both the practical and ideological choices within the editorial process, I el…
