Mis seal looduse keskel, „taga tamme haavikussa / lehtedessa lepikussa” edasi juhtub, pole päris selge. Mees lubab naisele midagi või [...]

IntroductionContinuities, Shifts, and Narrative Temporalities Sheila Bock and Elo-Hanna Seljamaa In their introduction to the inaugural issue of this journal in the spring of 2014, the founding editors Ulrich Marzolph and Regina Bendix introduced "narrative culture" as a concept that both defines the scope of the journal and envisions an interdisciplinary, international field of study. Telling, consuming, interpreting, recognizing, and witnessing…
Kuulub – ei kuulu. Kuulumise, konviviaalsuse ja autohtoonsuse mõistetest
Artikli eesmärk on tutvustada teoreetilist sõnavara, mis on loodud uurimaks argist ühiselu ja erinevustega toimetulekut tänapäeva mitmekultuurilistes ja -keelsetes ühiskondades ehk teemasid, mis on pälvinud mujal palju tähelepanu, kuid mida uuemad Eestis ilmunud identiteedi- ja kultuurikäsitlused otseselt ei puuduta (nt Viik 2012; Ehala 2018; Raud 2018). Ülevaate keskmes on mõiste kuulumine ja sellest lähtuv identiteedi [...]
Diversities Claimed, Displayed and Silenced
Inspired by Barbro Klein's research on silences and exclusions in the Swedish folklife sphere, this article explores how diversity is handled at the new Estonian National Museum, which opened in 2016. While its permanent exhibition Encounters makes the bold claim of representing the Estonian territory and its inhabitants from the Stone Age to the present day, a closer look at its contents and design suggests that it does so by repeating, sometime…

Rahvuslikkus teiste silmades
Hiljaaegu tutvustati mind lausega: „Tema on folklorist.” Aimasin järgneva dialoogi kurssi ega pidanud pettuma: „Siis sa uurid rahvalaule ja muinasjutte.” „Ja-jah, ja muistendeid ja vanasõnu,” tulin uuele tuttavale vastu.Nädal hiljem sama inimesega kokku juhtudes tuli tema initsiatiivil juttu algriimist, mida minu vestluspartner pidas meile – eesti keeles kõnelejatele-kirjutajatele – lõppriimist loomuomasemaks. Folkloristina olen harjunud, et [...…

Where Silence Takes Us, if We Listen to It
Silencing and Amplifying Ethnicity in Estonia an Ethnographic Account From Tallinn
Drawing on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in the ethnically divided capital of Estonia, this article 1 suggests that the tacit norm of reciprocity and neighbourliness in Tallinn is to silence rather than amplify ethnicity. Silencing ethnicity is a continuous, context-dependent interactional process that includes linguistic strategies, as well as spatial orderings. The article discusses how residents of Tallinn negotiate and sustain distinctions…

Minority Identities and the Construction of Rights in Post-Soviet Settings
This article looks at the emergent policies and legal constraints shaping identity constructions within and for minority groups in Estonia and in northwest Russia, in order to investigate the processes of 'minority-building' and emergent state policies through cultural entanglements. The case studies discussed comprise legal regulations and measures for the promotion of minority identities in Estonia with special focus on Estonian Russians, the c…
