Bronze and scarlet
In 2023, a statue of Vivian Bullwinkel (1915–2000) was unveiled at the Australian War Memorial (AWM). This was significant as the first statue of a ‘real’, (non-allegorical) woman in the grounds of the AWM. This provides an appropriate occasion to reflect on the workings of gender in the contemporary commemoration of war. Female social entrepreneurs in India
Purpose This study examines how the familial relationships shape the success of female social entrepreneurs (FSEs) in emerging economies, with a focus on middle-class India. This study looks at the capital generated by such familial relationships and how this gets mobilised. We can experience a memorial site in various ways, from the most embodied to the most abstract, with attention to the dynamic, three-dimensional, tactile, visual and aural dimensions of the site, and the local, national and transnational dimensions of memorialization. It is over seventy years since the issue of systematized sexual abuse in the Asia-Pacific War came to light in interrogations leading up to the post-Second World War Military Tribunals.
