  • Climate action versus environmental protection? How far-right and environmentalist messengers shape public attitudes towards renewable energy infrastructure in forests

    Open Access•Manès Weisskircher, Matthias Diermeier•ARTICLE•Environmental Politics•2025•References: 77

This article examines how political messengers, and not the message, influence attitudes toward renewable energy infrastructure amid an increasingly polarized climate change debate. Focusing on wind power, a highly politicized issue, and solar energy, less contentious, we conducted an experimental survey in Germany. We assess how either a far-right or an environmentalist critic affect acceptance of renewables. Importantly, our analysis examines s…

  • Tailoring the truth – evidence on parliamentarians’ responsiveness and misinformation toleration from a field experiment

    Open Access•Matthias Diermeier•ARTICLE•European Political Science Review•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 64

Populist radical right parties (PRRPs) claim to be particularly responsive to people’s needs and have been identified as a major source of disinformation. The present contribution sets up a field experiment to zoom in on one-to-one communication between voters and their parliamentarians. By drawing on pieces of misinformation that are present among different parties’ supporters, artificial citizen’s requests are sent to all 2503 German federal pa…

  • Die Kamerun-Koalition

    Open Access•Judith Niehues, Matthias Diermeier•CHAPTER•»Mehr Fortschritt Wagen«? :…•2022

  • Towards a nuanced understanding of anti-immigration sentiment in the welfare state - a program specific analysis of welfare preferences

    Open Access•Matthias Diermeier, Judith Niehues•ARTICLE•Rationality and Society•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 61

The literature on immigration and the welfare state describes a trade-off between immigration and welfare support. We argue for a more nuanced view of welfare chauvinism that accounts for different motivational channels, specific welfare programs and particular population subgroups. First, we identify two separate characteristics of hostility towards immigrants that trigger welfare chauvinism: affective anti-migration sentiment that combines econ…

  • Contradictory welfare conditioning—differing welfare support for natives versus immigrants

Matthias Diermeier, Judith Niehues et al.•ARTICLE•Review of International Political…•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 20

The New Liberal Dilemma predicts that European universal welfare states lose support among natives due to large immigration numbers. This article contributes to the debate regarding the validity of the argument posited by the New Liberal Dilemma by examining the contradictory combination of support for a popular welfare state reform, Universal Basic Income (UBI), and conditionality for immigrants’ access to the welfare state in 20 European countr…

  • Ist mehr besser? Politische Implikationen der disparaten Daseinsvorsorge in Deutschland

    Open Access•Matthias Diermeier•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Politikwissenschaft•2020•Cited by: 16•References: 18

  • Perception and Reality—Economic Inequality as a Driver of Populism

    Open Access•Michael Hüther, Matthias Diermeier•ARTICLE•Analyse & Kritik•2019•Cited by: 2

Can the rise of populism be explained by the growing chasm between rich and poor? With regard to Germany, such a causal relationship must be rejected. Income distribution in Germany has been very stable since 2005, and people’s knowledge on actual inequality and economic development is limited: inequality and unemployment are massively overestimated. At the same time, a persistently isolationist and xenophobic group with diverse concerns and pref…
