  • The Role of Professional Development in Shaping Teachers’ Youth Mental Health First Aid Experiences

    Open Access•Kristina K Childs, Jennifer H Peck et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2025

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) is a widely adopted professional development tool that helps educators across the United States improve their mental health literacy. Data from a pretest/posttest evaluation of the YMHFA training delivered at five schools are used to explore whether various YMHFA outcomes differ for teachers who have and have not received previous mental health training. Specifically, the current study compares scores on conf…

Sara N Lucak, Jennifer H Peck et al.•ARTICLE•Terrorism and Political Violence•2025

While hate-motivated extremist groups are known to contribute to violence in the United States, less is known about the socialization into racial extremist ideologies and how this varies across age groups. Using data from the Profile of Individuals Radicalized in the United States (PIRUS), this study examines whether principles from social learning theory (e.g., differential association, definitions) apply to racial extremist ideologies, and if t…

  • Predictive Bias in Juvenile Risk Assessment

    Open Access•Kristina K Childs, Jennifer H Peck et al.•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2024

This study examines the joint effects of race/ethnicity and sex on the classification quality of the Positive Achievement Change Tool (PACT). We assess predictive parity, calibration, and error rate balance using a statewide sample of youth who completed probation from 2007 to 2014. Similar rates of predictive parity were observed across groups. Calibration was observed consistently across groups, but only when low risk youth were used as the ref…

  • Implementation and evaluation of a juvenile mental health training for law enforcement in a medium‐sized jurisdiction

    Open Access•Caitlin M Brady, Kristina K Childs•ARTICLE•Behavioral Sciences & the Law•2023

The need for specialized training programs that are focused on youth mental health needs, awareness of community‐based services, and de‐escalation skills is growing across law enforcement agencies due to calls for service that involve youth in mental health crisis. The current study evaluates a juvenile mental health training for law enforcement that was developed based on agency needs. The training was completed by 159 officers and a pre‐/post‐t…

  • The Role of Family Structure and Family Processes on Adolescent Problem Behavior

    Kristina K Childs, Caitlin M Brady et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 70

We examined the impact of family structure and family processes on engagement in multiple and co-occurring problem behaviors during adolescence (delinquency, substance use, risky sexual behavior, and truancy) while accounting for key risk factors (attachment to school, antisocial peers, self-control, and residential stability) for antisocial behavior. Using data from Waves 1 and 2 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (…

  • Juvenile Risk and Needs Assessment

Christopher J Sullivan, Kristina K Childs•BOOK•Juvenile Risk and Needs Assessment•2021

This book takes a comprehensive, analytic approach to understanding Juvenile Risk and Needs Assessment (JRNA), covering elements relevant to how the practice affects youths’ cases and the juvenile justice system. The work draws on both analysis of the extensive research on risk and needs assessment in the juvenile justice system as well as data from the authors’ recent work in the area. Authors Sullivan and Childs have extensive experience in tea…

    Kristina K Childs, Megan Davidson et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2016•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 59

This study expands on previous research on adolescent problem behaviors by examining whether different constellations of problem behavior in adolescence differentially impact outcomes during emerging adulthood. Data from the in-home interviews of waves 2 and 3 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) were used to examine these relationships. Latent class analysis, using nineteen problem behaviors measured at wave 2, id…

This study examines the impact of changes in the influence of several individual-level constructs (e.g., risk-seeking, family, peers, attitudes) on involvement in substance use and delinquent behavior during mid to late adolescence. Data were drawn from the longitudinal evaluation of the Gang Resistance, Education, and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) program. The final pooled time series samples used in the analyses were n=2,515 in the delinquency model (o…

  • Detecting, Preventing, and Treating Sexually Transmitted Diseases Among Adolescent Arrestees

Steven Belenko, Richard Dembo et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2009•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 106

Studies of detained and incarcerated adolescent offenders in the United States indicate that these juveniles have an elevated risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). However, many more arrestees enter the “front end” of the juvenile justice system than are detained or incarcerated, and research into the STD risk profiles and service needs of this larger group is lacking. An expansion of STD testing (including of asymptomatic youths), preven…

  • Police use of force and neighbourhood characteristics

    Kim Michelle Lersch, Thomas D Bazley et al.•ARTICLE•Policing & Society•2008•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 14

This study examines relationships between the force levels applied by police officers and the characteristics of the neighbourhoods where these events occurred. The data upon which this study is based was drawn from a municipal police department in the southern USA for the year 2000. Information from the official Use of Force reports was linked to census block data and crime tract data, thus providing an opportunity to investigate whether severit…
