  • Learning Difference: Race and Schooling in the Multiracial Metropolis

Annegret Staiger, Annegret Daniela Staiger•BOOK•Learning Difference•2006

This ethnographic study of an urban high school in one of the most diverse cities in the United States examines the role that race plays in the lives of students. At a school publicly celebrated for its integration, academic excellence, and racial harmony, the reality is a different story: that of continuing internal segregation and racial conflicts. Examining the role of race in neighborhood relations, desegregation programs, and school violence…

    Annegret Staiger•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2005•Cited by: 3

A daily war is waged in schools all over the United States over wall space. Adolescents are using school walls to convey messages, create name recognition, slander each other, or for claiming territorial space. On the other side is the school administration, which paints over and erases these unsanctioned claims to space, power and identity, as it regards these expressions as challenging the authority of the school. In this paper, which is based …

All peer groups studied understood the pimp as representing sexual prowess, but for the African American peer group, the pimp m…

    Annegret Staiger•ARTICLE•Social Problems•2004•Cited by: 21•References: 17

By examining a gifted magnet of an urban California high school as a racial project, this study contributes to our understanding of racial formation. The study analyzes the organizational and representational practices of this voluntary desegregation tool—a partial-site magnet program for “gifted” students—and its impact on students inside and outside the program. In doing so, the study reveals how, in contrast to its stated mission, this form of…
