The great debate on mining mita revealed the magnitude of “another mita”, the religious mita. This article analyses three themes. Firstly, the religious positions and the turns or mitas that existed for the different celebrations, including the “services” and the works carried out for the construction of the Church of San Pedro de Buenavista and for the priests’ residence. Secondly, women’s participation in services, both for the priest and for t…

Potosí in the Global Silver Age (16th—19th Centuries)
In Ciudadanos armados de ley, Marta Irurozqui addresses a topic that she has been researching since her 2000 book “A bala, piedra y palo”: La construcción de la ciudadanía política en Bolívia, 1826–1952: the building of citizenship in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Bolivia. Her work is part of the important renewal of political history linked to analysis of the Spanish crisis of 1808 and Spanish American independence (since the works of Franço…
Spectacular Wealth: The Festivals of Colonial South American Mining Towns
Spectacular wealth and festivals were produced in the two colonial mining towns addressed in this book: the great silver town of Potosí, in the Spanish empire; and Minas Gerais's Vila Rica do Ouro Preto (Rich Town of Black Gold), in the Portuguese empire. Festivals and the display of power are important topics analyzed widely in Europe since Jacob Burckhardt. Researchers have now a database, from the University of Oxford, of early modern festival…

Working Silver for the World: Mining Labor and Popular Economy in Colonial Potosí
The silver produced by indigenous mine workers in Potosí, Bolivia, helped fuel early modern global trade. While historiography has analyzed the structure of the labor force, one important question has not been addressed: how workers themselves acted on and changed the conditions imposed on their lives. This article argues that they fundamentally shaped Potosí's labor system. I analyze, then, the interaction between coerced and free labor— mitayos…
