Spirituality in the Hungarian Permaculture Movement
This study aims to explore aspects of religion and spirituality within the Hungarian permaculture movement, demonstrating that while permaculture is first and foremost a rational and pragmatic practice grounded in ecological principles, its ethical and holistic approach remains open to various forms of spirituality. In the author’s view, religion and spirituality within the Hungarian community remain largely unseen at present: regarded as a priva…
Defending fact-checking partnerships with platform companies
This article investigates how professional fact-checkers defend collaborations with major platform companies such as Meta, Alphabet, and ByteDance. Drawing on 12 qualitative interviews with European fact-checkers, the study applies rhetorical apologia theory to analyse recurring justificatory arguments. We identify four modes of differentiation and three modes of transcendence employed by fact-checkers. Arguments of differentiation involve distan…

Talking back to the West
The roots of reactionary tech oligarchy and the need for radical democratic alternatives
The aim for this commentary is two-fold: first, we seek to outline how decades of liberal “post-democratic” hegemony—prevalent across liberal democratic parliaments, journalism, and academia—have enabled the rise of reactionary tech oligarchy. Second, we call for cross-disciplinary and cross-societal alliances that not only reject depoliticized euphemisms such as “polarization,” “populism,” and “post-truth,” but also actively commit to building r…
A Discursive Turn in Journalism Studies? A Systematic Review of Discourse Analysis in Leading Journalism Journals
Discourse analysis has a long history within journalism studies, representing a key area of theoretical cross-fertilization with linguistics, semiotics, continental philosophy, and political theory. In recent years, discursive approaches have garnered new attention in journalism research through scholarly calls for a “discursive turn” in relation to journalistic roles, boundaries, and institutions and for the study of “metajournalistic discourse”…
Vidéki ökológiai életmód női perspektívában
Tanulmányom középpontjában magyarországi, vidékre költözött nők állnak. Egészen pontosan olyan nők, akik a kortárs ökológiai, társadalmi, gazdasági és etikai válságra adott válaszul, a teljes ökológiai életreform megvalósítása érdekében választották a vidéki életet. Bemutatom motivációikat; speciális nehézségeiket és könnyebbségeiket; a női szerepeket az öko-közösségekben és e szerepek változását; álmaikat és hogy miként érzik magukat ebben az él…
Post-Truth, Fake News and Democracy
The new edition of Post-Truth, Fake News and Democracy offers an updated overview and critical discussion of contemporary discourses around truth, misinformation, and democracy, while also mapping cutting-edge scholarship. Through in-depth analyses of news articles, commentaries, academic publications, policy briefs, and political speeches, the book engages with the underlying normative ideas that shape how fake news is being addressed across the…
Fake News in Metajournalistic Discourse
In recent years, fake news has become central to debates about the state and future of journalism. This article examines imaginaries around fake news as a threat to democracy and the role of journalism in mitigating this threat. The study builds on 34 qualitative interviews with Danish journalists, media experts, government officials, and social media company representatives as well as 42 editorials from nine national Danish news outlets. Drawing…
News on fake news
This article presents a qualitative study of media discourses around fake news, examining 288 news articles from two national elections in Denmark in 2019. It explores how news media construct fake news as a national security threat and how journalists articulate their own role in relation to this threat. The study draws on discourse theory and the concept of logics to critically map how particular meaning ascriptions and subject positions come t…
Crafts Revival in Ecovillages
The basic goal of ecovillages is to create a sustainable lifestyle and community. Many residents of Hungarian ecovillages consider traditional peasant culture the example of an ecological lifestyle; for them, traditional peasant ecological knowledge and practice is an important reference point. Therefore, the pursuit of ecological ideology and an eco-conscious, sustainable way of life naturally leads ecovillagers to peasant material culture. In t…

The editors are grateful to all those who have helped make the fifth volume of the Proceedings of the Olomouc Linguistics Colloquium (and the ninth volume in the whole series) a reality.Above all, as always, we would like to thank all the authors for both their enthusiastic participation in the conference and their cooperation in the time-consuming editorial process. We would also like to express our immense gratitude to all the reviewers who devo…
Racism, Hate Speech, and Social Media
Departing from Jessie Daniels’s 2013 review of scholarship on race and racism online, this article maps and discusses recent developments in the study of racism and hate speech in the subfield of social media research. Systematically examining 104 articles, we address three research questions: Which geographical contexts, platforms, and methods do researchers engage with in studies of racism and hate speech on social media? To what extent does sc…
Eco Valley or New Vraja Dham? Competing Emic Interpretations of the Hungarian Krishna Valley
One of the reasons for the spread of the Western Hare Krishna movement is that it offers several alternatives for the practice of religion: devotees can be full-fledged members of the church in congregations located in complex urban or in simple rural contexts. An example of the latter is Krishna Valley, where approximately 130 Krishna-devotees live austere lives. My paper presents the interpretations of this settlement concentrating on (multiple…

Post-Truth, Fake News and Democracy
Western societies are under siege, as fake news, post-truth and alternative facts are undermining the very core of democracy. This dystopian narrative is currently circulated by intellectuals, journalists and policy makers worldwide. In this book, Johan Farkas and Jannick Schou deliver a comprehensive study of post-truth discourses. They critically map the normative ideas contained in these and present a forceful call for deepening democracy. \n …
Donald Trump Is My President
This article presents a typological study of the Twitter accounts operated by the Internet Research Agency (IRA), a company specialized in online influence operations based in St. Petersburg, Russia. Drawing on concepts from 20th-century propaganda theory, we modeled the IRA operations along propaganda classes and campaign targets. The study relies on two historical databases and data from the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine to retrieve 826 us…
Fake News as a Floating Signifier
“Fake news” has emerged as a global buzzword. While prominent media outlets, such as The New York Times, CNN, and Buzzfeed News, have used the term to designate misleading information spread online, President Donald Trump has used the term as a negative designation of these very “mainstream media.” In this article, we argue that the concept of “fake news” has become an important component in contemporary political struggles. We showcase how the t…
Nature Faith and Native Faith as Integrative Spiritualities in Hungarian Ecovillages
A basic assumption in contemporary research on religion is that religion is not an abstract system with 'neat' compartments, but a system that changes and adapts as human beings encounter, understand, interpret, and practice it. Within this basic understanding, religion scholar Marion Bowman has proposed the term 'integrative spirituality' to refer specifically to lifestyle choices that combine an eclectic mix of spiritual ideas and practices to …
Platformed antagonism
This research examines how fake identities on social media create and sustain antagonistic and racist discourses. It does so by analysing 11 Danish Facebook pages, disguised as Muslim extremists living in Denmark, conspiring to kill and rape Danish citizens. It explores how anonymous content producers utilise Facebook’s socio-technical characteristics to construct, what we propose to term as, platformed antagonism. This term refers to socio-techn…
Stop Fake Hate Profiles on Facebook’
This research examines how activists mobilise against fake hate profiles on Facebook. Based on six months of participant observation, this paper demonstrates how Danish Facebook users organised to combat fictitious Muslim profiles that spurred hatred against ethnic minorities. Crowdsourced action by Facebook users is insufficient as a form of sustainable resistance against fake hate profiles. A viable solution would require social media companies…
Cloaked Facebook pages
This research analyses cloaked Facebook pages that are created to spread political propaganda by cloaking a user profile and imitating the identity of a political opponent in order to spark hateful and aggressive reactions. This inquiry is pursued through a multi-sited online ethnographic case study of Danish Facebook pages disguised as radical Islamist pages, which provoked racist and anti-Muslim reactions as well as negative sentiments towards …
Very Little Heroes' History and Roots of the Eco-Village Movement
Although the ecovillage-movement is a relatively new phenomenon (it was first formalised in the 1990s), the initiatives, which aim to integrate, do have a much longer history. The author of this article has been studying ecovillages since 2008. As a cultural anthropologist, her focus lies in the socio-cultural dimensions of the ecovillage-movement. In the present paper the history and roots of the movement are covered by positioning eco-villages …
There are no recipes
Nutrition, as a fundamental human need as well as a manifestation of a social and cultural function, has always been the focus of ethnographic and anthropological research. Various concepts - sometimes radically different and at odds with each other - have emerged in modern societies to define food that can be considered safe. These include various nutritionrelated movements. Like all social movements, these movements also act as a signaling syst…
The relationship between (in)alienable possession and the (three potential) forms of possessed nouns in Hungarian
The paper gives a thorough insight into the system of possible forms of (in)alienably possessed nouns in Hungarian. Its point of departure is the group of [Nominative + -j- +A] possessive forms the stem of which has an alternative (morphologically “shorter”) possessive form; such longer possessive forms are claimed to express alienable possession (see den Dikken 2015). We point out that Hungarian deverbal nominals― and especially the groups of T-…
