From authority to similarity: How Google transformed its knowledge infrastructure using computer vision
We investigate the impact of computer vision models, a prominent artificial intelligence tool, on critical knowledge infrastructure, using the case of Google search engines. We answer the following research question: How do search results for Google Images compare internationally with those for Google Search, and how can these results be explained by changes in Google's knowledge infrastructure? To answer this question, we carry out four steps: (…
Ambient Amplification: Attention Hijacking and Social Media Propaganda
Over the last decade, the rise of memetic media in combination with multimodal platform environments have radically transformed our experience of digital culture. On TikTok, gestures and sounds go viral. Twitter (X) @tags operate as bonding tools and ignite ‘supercharged’ critical publics. Coordinated link-sharing and attention-hijacking drive cross-platform engagement. Narratives promoted by state institutions become part of the global digital c…
“Want Boyfriend ❌❌❌”: Porn Bots, Authenticity and Social Automation on Instagram
Whenever a celebrity posts a photo on Instagram, it is almost inevitable that the first comment on it will be made by a porn bot (Alvarez 2020). Observations of this kind – some focusing on the distorted perception of ‘sexiness’ and social media authenticity (Thing 2020; Salim 2023), others contesting Instagram’s community guidelines prohibiting both nudity and automation (Santos 2023) – have been ubiquitous in online tech reports for years. In a…
Noise in sonic social media: Memetic soundscapes of Deep TikTok
This article contends that the attention economy of social media reflects a shift toward soundscapes where networked sound objects – whether popular music or ambient sound, remixed speech or glitched audio – play a central role in amplifying user engagement. The analysis centers on audiovisual communities that operate as contra points to common TikTok trends, with particular attention to the Alt genre and niche phenomenon of Deep TikTok or DeepTo…
Horny&training’: Porn bots, authenticity, and social automation on Instagram
This article presents a conceptual and methodological account of a small porn bot network, focusing on its embeddedness within Instagram use. The analysis explores the gendered design of bots as platform-native personas, particularly their capacity to perform within the confines of Instagram's increasingly strict sexual content controls. We address three performative trajectories in the bot-exploited 'Instagrammatics' of identity play, social inf…
Networked masterplots: Music, pro-Russian sentiment, and participatory propaganda on TikTok
This article investigates engagement with propagandist TikTok videos shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, with particular attention to the role of music and comments. By repurposing the infrastructure of TikTok soundlinking, our research upholds sensitivity to how this infrastructure enables affective and participatory workings of propaganda. We develop the notion of networked masterplots based on a situated analysis o…
Memetic commenting: Armenian curses and the Twitter theatre of Trump's deselection
On 7 November 2020, strange things were happening in the comments to @realDonaldTrump's tweet erroneously arguing that he had won the US presidential election, ‘BY A LOT’. Posting quote tweets and replies in Armenian in tandem with ‘cursed images’, memes, and creepypasta, users engaged in a spam-like trollish intervention, even as Twitter kept removing the said content in real time. Exploring this online incident through various analytical techni…
Wartok: Networked Soundscapes of Memetic Warfare
This panel investigates the networked soundscapes of memetic warfare on TikTok, a platform crucial in mediating the ongoing war in Ukraine since February 2022. Introduced to the public as a unique form of war programming during the first week of Russia's full-scale military invasion (Mobilio 2022), WarTok—a portmanteau of ‘TikTok’ and ‘war’—signifies "the war of super-empowered individuals armed only with smartphones" (Friedmann 2022). Producing …
Nipples, memes, and algorithmic failure: NSFW critique of Tumblr censorship
In November 2018, after being suspended from Apple’s App Store for hosting child pornography, Tumblr announced its decision to ban all NSFW (not safe/suitable for work) content with the aid of machine-learning classification. The decision to opt for strict terms of use governing nudity and sexual depiction was as fast as it was drastic, leading to the quick erasure of subcultural networks developed over a decade. This article maps out platform cr…
From Netflix Streaming to Netflix and Chill: The (Dis)Connected Body of Serial Binge-Viewer
With the digitization of the entertainment industry, our everyday media encounters become increasingly data-saturated. In the framework of the digital attention economy, lifestyle technologies stimulate and modulate intensive participation on a regular basis. By conceptualizing the American streaming brand and content provider Netflix as a networked experiential environment, this article explores the practice of binge-watching in light of its mul…
The Context Is the Act: The Concept of Active Audience and Its Material Entanglements
What are the main concerns that continue to motivate active audience research since its prominent beginnings in the context of British cultural studies? Where do agency and its political potentials come from in the era of globalization? In what sense is the subject passive or active? In his book Active Audience: A New Materialistic Interpretation of a Key Concept in Cultural Studies, Huimin Jin, Chair Professor at Chinese Academy of Social Scienc…
