Searching for ‘the normal one’ – the influence of club affiliation on supporters’ demands
While the demands of active football supporters, such as ultras and other organized fan groups, have been extensively researched, the attitudes of the ‘silent, ordinary supporters’ remain largely unknown. Therefore, this article investigates the attitudes of ‘normal supporters’ toward current governance issues in football and how these factors influence overall satisfaction with club management. Moreover, the study compares five club-related fan …
Public subsidies for professional football clubs
Despite the economic growth of professional football in Europe, clubs continue to receive substantial public subsidies, raising questions of legitimacy. While the relationship between public authorities and professional football has been studied from various disciplinary perspectives, an integrated theoretical framework remains absent.
However, the results in detail show distinct differences which underlines the need for more diverse evidence on fan attitud…

This study explores sentiments towards the World ESports Association (WESA) within a Counter-Strike Reddit community. Esports communities have not embraced the various self-proclaimed domestic and international esports governing organisations and are notoriously hostile to any organisation perceived as exploiting them. Our sentiment analysis was based on a review of 5359 comments (distributed across 29 threads and five subreddits) made by Counter…
Esports Associations and the Pursuit of Legitimacy
The dominant position of esports game publishers is a fundamental difference between the systemic governance of esports and traditional sports. There are no such equivalent organizations in traditional sports. As for-profit corporations, the publishers develop and market the electronic games as their commercial products and thus, possess exclusive property rights. Publishers control the virtual sporting environment and the rules of the game. In c…
