Families and Childhood Disabilities
Research over the past 50 years has documented many social barriers encountered by parents raising disabled children including difficulties obtaining diagnoses, accessing information and services, and managing stigma. Parents are often forced to embark on an individual search for information and appropriate services and to fight for scarce resources. This study examines the impact of self-identified disability experience on specific aspects of perceived stigma and their consequences. University students with disabilities, close family members of individuals with disabilities, those with regular occupational or social contact with individuals with disabilities, and others with no experience with disability, are compared by means of multivariate analyses of survey data. This study examines the additive and interactive impact of four dimensions of health locus of control (internality, desire for information, powerful others, and chance) on two measures of well-being (perceived social support and subjective caregiver burden) among 81 mothers of children with disabilities.
