Democratization, development, and inequality: The Limits of Redistributive Models of Democracy
Karl Polanyi, the 'always-embedded market economy,' and the re-writing of The Great Transformation
Before Hegemony: Britain, Free Trade, and Nineteenth-Century World Order Revisited: Before Hegemony
This article argues that neo-Gramscian theorizations of “hegemony” have failed to illuminate the role of nineteenth-century Britain in the rise of a liberal world economy in three respects. First, they have provided mutually exclusive accounts of the social forces underpinning domestic and international hegemony. Second, they have failed to show Britain's agency in the making of a liberal world order. Third, they have posited a uniformity of soci…
The Slight Transformation: Contesting the Legacy of Karl Polanyi
The postwar reconstruction of domestic and international orders ushered in a new political economy of capitalism. It entailed a far-reaching reorganization of social relations and economic institutions and accorded to the state an important role in the management of the economy. Many of the institutions of classical liberalism were displaced by interventionist mechanisms. The welfare state consolidated and extended multifarious forms of protectio…
The changing ‘logics’ of capitalist competition
This article criticizes contemporary attempts within the Marxist tradition to understand the current juncture of international relations in terms of either a return to classical Marxist theories of inter-imperial rivalry or ultra-imperialism. It argues instead to put the debate on a new theoretical footing that is able to capture the rich diversity of international relations and permutations of territorial orders within the entire history of capi…

Transforming Identities: Beyond the Politics of Non-Settlement in North Cyprus
The collapse of the Annan Plan notwithstanding, the vast support it received from Turkish Cypriots marked the culmination of a far-reaching process of social and political transformation in North Cyprus. In this article this transformation is charted and explained in terms of a reimagining of political community and cultural identity that challenged the previously prevailing Turkish nationalism. While the political implications of this reconstruc…
International transformation and the persistence of territoriality: Toward a new political geography of capitalism
Starting from the premise that the proper foundation for the historicisation of international systems lies in the delineation of the prevailing social property relations of an epoch, my paper seeks to conceptualise the international relations of capitalist modernity. This endeavour, however, runs into problems when no conceptual basis in capitalist social relations can be spelled out that would specify clearly why capitalism needs an interstate s…
Putting the state in its place: The critique of state-centrism and its limits
The critique of state-centrism is a crucial aspect of the restructuring of International Relations theory, widely seen as a precondition for the conceptualisation of international transformation. In this article, I argue that the terms on which this critique is framed lead to claims which are both too sweeping in their implications for a transformation to a post-Westphalian system, and not radical enough with respect to the Westphalian period its…
