  • Nutrition and energy expenditure during a polar expedition

    Open Access•J P Masterton, H E Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1958•References: 2

Food intake on a polar expedition has always been a problem to those in charge of the commissariat. For years it has been accepted that man has a very high energy expenditure while sledging. Because of this it has always been the custom to provide a sledging diet which yields the greatest number of calories in the smallest weight

  • A Modern Sledging Ration

    H E Lewis, J P Masterton•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1958

Sledging RATIONS on Polar expeditions have been relatively unchanged since Watk s evolved a very wo kabl and apparently adequ e one for his British Arctic Air Route Expedition of 1930-1 (Chapman, 1932). This ration is shown in Table I. With a few modifications, it is the one taken by most Polar wintering parties and is exemplified by the one taken on the British North Greenland Expedition 1952-4 (Simpson, 1957). This ration is shown in Table II
