Potency: A Readjustment-Promoting Link in the Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons
A study among a stratified sample of Israeli disabled war veterans ascertained the contribution of 'potency' - a recently discerned stress-moderating link in the coping process - in promoting the readaptation to social life of traumatically disabled persons. Potency reflects a combination of self-confidence and commitment to and trust in society. The data suggest that potency is likely to weaken the deleterious impact of inadequate coping with th…

The Latent Functions of Welfare and Need-Satisfaction of the Disadvantaged
In a study carried out among a representative sample of Jewish Israeli adults, a paradigm of need-satisfaction by direct welfare assistance has been developed and, to a great extent, empirically supported. Multivariate analysis revealed that, despite the fact that it is recognized as indispensible in facilitating basic living conditions, direct welfare assistance, whatever its kind, predicts frustration rather than need-satisfaction. The data asc…

The Structure of a Hospital??s Image
The study is intended to elucidate the factors that affect the creation of a hospital's image in the eyes of the patient and their relative weight in producing that image. The image of a hospital is important for enhancing the patient's reassurance and relief from possible anxiety that is hazardous to the health, which may result both from the patient's subjectively perceived seriousness of his condition and from his inability to judge the effica…

Stress Potential and Esotericity of Health Problems: The Significance of the Physician??s Affective Behavior
The study examines the assumptions and the interpretation of data from recent studies that were intended to identify and explain patients' inclination to assess the efficacy of medical treatment on the basis of physicians' affective behavior toward them. It was hypothesized that this manner of assessment is specific to the doctor-patient relationship due to the uniqueness of the patient's problem, which is characterized by a relatively high stres…

The health promoting function of mass media and reference groups: Motivating or reinforcing of behavior change

Involvement with a disease and primary care utilization
Is it possible to predict from the attitdues toward diseases the likelihood of primary care utilization? Moreover, considering that an attitude is frequently defined as comprising three main elements: the affective, cognitive and instrumental (1, pp.36–37), is one of these elements predominant in determining the likelihood of medical helpseeking, or does the tendency to seek a General Practitioner's help vary in accordance with the degree of one'…

The Image of Political Parties and the Structure of a Political Map
The present day vagueness of the definition of a party's character by the location on a left‐right continuum is first considered. A theoretically based measurable formal definition of a party's location is proposed, determined by the solutions given by the parties to a population's collectivistic and individualistic needs as measurable components of the parties'images. Multivariate analysis of Israeli data produced a structure of intercorrelation…
