In recent years, Sweden has been one of the largest receiving countries of unaccompanied minors, compared to other EU member states. Recent studies have increasingly stressed the strength, resilience and agency of unaccompanied minors, despite the traumatic experiences and challenges they face. In this article, we study unaccompanied minors in the Swedish education system and the labour market using register-based data covering the period 2003-20…

The Syrian refugee challenge and Turkey's quest for normative power in the Middle East
This article examines the Syrian refugee challenge as a case study in order to understand the inherent contradictions evident in Turkey's efforts to exert normative power in the Middle East. The article is divided into two sections. The first part examines how Turkey has attempted to transform itself from a country that has in the past been accused by elements in the West of "lacking [the] standards of [a] civilization" into a candidate for full …
Parental Background and Union Formation Behavior of Native Born Individuals in Sweden with a Foreign Background
Social cohesion in destination countries is an increasingly important issue due to the multiethnic structures in these countries and due to ongoing international migration. Union formation of individuals across different backgrounds can be seen as an indicator of social cohesion. However, this phenomenon is important not only in the case of first generation migrants but also for their descendants. Thus, this paper analyzes the determinants of int…

This paper investigates the labor and marriage market incorporation of individuals originating from Turkey in comparison to other migrant groups in Sweden. Using high-quality register data from Statistics Sweden, the progress of and challenges facing this group are analyzed in comparison to their European and Middle Eastern counterparts, both over time and over generations. The descriptive results point to the economic progress of individuals fro…
Intergenerational transmission of interethnic union formation patterns in Sweden
This paper explores intergenerational transmission of interethnic union formation behaviour within families. Using register data from Statistics Sweden I find a strong association in union formation patterns between parents and their offspring. This association holds for all levels of individual and parental education and all regions of origin, except for Americans. When countries of origin are categorized according to cultural distance to the Sw…
