  • Realising consilience

Open Access•Adam Izdebski, Karin Holmgren et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Reviews•2016

This paper reviews the methodological and practical issues relevant to the ways in which natural scientists, historians and archaeologists may collaborate in the study of past climatic changes in the Mediterranean basin. We begin by discussing the methodologies of these three disciplines in the context of the consilience debate, that is, attempts to unify different research methodologies that address similar problems. We demonstrate that there ar…

  • Quaternary Environmental Change in Southern Africa

    Open Access•Stefan Grab, S McCourt et al.•BOOK•Quaternary Environmental Change…•2016

Ongoing climate change necessitates advances in our understanding of the interrelationships between climate, landscape-shaping processes and human activity over long time periods, especially in areas that are already climatically stressed. This volume presents new ideas on macroscale landscape evolution; mountain, fluvial and aeolian processes; and environments in southern Africa, a key region in the story of human evolution during the last two m…

  • European summer temperatures since Roman times

    Open Access•Jürg Luterbacher, J Werner et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

The spatial context is criticalwhen assessing present-day climate anomalies, attributing them to potential forcings and making statements regarding their frequency and severity in a long-term perspective. Recent international initiatives have expanded the number of high-quality proxy-records and developed new statistical reconstruction methods. These advances allow more rigorous regional past temperature reconstructions and, in turn, the possibil…

  • High-resolution environmental reconstruction in SW Peloponnese, Greece, covering the last c . 6000 years

    Open Access•Christos Katrantsiotis, Elin Norström et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 17

A paleolimnological record from the central Messenian plain (southwestern Peloponnese, southern Greece) indicates rapid changes in the water level and chemistry of a transient lake on the flanks of the Taygetos Mountains during the last c. 6000 years. The analyses are based on diatoms as well as carbon and nitrogen isotopes from bulk sediments in a 7.5-m-long sediment core retrieved from the drained fen of Agios Floros, at the northern banks of t…

  • Speleothem evidence for late Holocene climate variability and floods in Southern Greece

    Open Access•Martin Finné, Miryam Bar‐matthew et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

We present stable isotope data (δ 18 O, δ 13 C) from a detrital rich stalagmite from Kapsia Cave, the Peloponnese, Greece. The cave is rich in archeological remains and there are reasons to believe that flooding of the cave has directly affected humans using the cave. Using a combination of U–Th and 14 C dating to constrain a site-specific correction factor for ( 232 Th/ 238 U) detrital molar ratio, a linear age model was constructed. The age mod…

  • Coastal forest and Miombo woodland history of the Vilankulo region, Mozambique

    Open Access•Anneli Ekblom, Jan Risberg et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 6

The present day distribution of Miombo savanna-woodland in Mozambique has been attributed to an expansion due to the clearing of original coastal forests through agriculture and use of fire. Here, we test this hypothesis using palaeoecological data from Lake Nhauhache, situated in the Vilankulo region. Our analysis shows that Brachystegia, one of the main constituents of the Miombo, has varied over time, and its variability seems to be driven by …

  • Coastal paleo-environment and sea-level change at Macassa Bay, southern Mozambique, since c 6600 cal BP

  • Climate in the eastern Mediterranean, and adjacent regions, during the past 6000 years – A review

Open Access•Martin Finné, Karin Holmgren et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2011

  • The development of the ancient irrigation system at Engaruka, northern Tanzania

    Open Access•Lars‐ove Westerberg, Lars-Ove Westerberg et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•2010•Cited by: 17•References: 63

Climate data from Empakaai Crater in northern Tanzania, covering the last 1200 years, are related to the establishment, development and decline of the ancient irrigation system at Engaruka. New dates for the system are linked to reconstructed climatic variations and historical data on long-distance and regional trade and migration patterns. A shift from a comparatively humid climate to drier conditions in the 1400s prompted the establishment of i…

  • Stable isotope variations in stalagmites from northwestern Sweden document changes in temperature and vegetation during the early Holocene

    Open Access•H S Sundqvist, Karin Holmgren et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2008•References: 2

In a comment on the paper by Sundqvist et al. (2007a), Hammarlund and Edwards suggest that the oxygen isotope signal of the speleothem records K1 and L4 from northwestern Sweden as well as for the earlier published stalagmite SG93 from northern Norway should mainly reflect variation in the δ 18 O of mean annual precipitation. The main argument used by the authors is that the SG93 δ 18 O record should show remarkable similarities with the lacustri…

  • Stable isotope variations in stalagmites from northwestern Sweden document climate and environmental changes during the early Holocene

    Open Access•H S Sundqvist, Karin Holmgren et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 10

This paper presents two early Holocene (9.6-5.9 ka BP) high-resolution stable isotope records of stalagmites from two caves in northwestern Sweden (Korallgrottan and Labyrintgrottan). Close similarities between the Swedish records and a previously presented Norwegian stalagmite oxygen isotope record emphasize the potential of Scandinavian stalagmites to provide high-resolution regional palaeoclimatic information. The stable oxygen isotope records…

    Open Access•Anders Moberg, D M Sonechkin et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2005

  • Holocene climate variability

    Open Access•Paul A Mayewski, Eelco E Rohling et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2004

Although the dramatic climate disruptions of the last glacial period have received considerable attention, relatively little has been directed toward climate variability in the Holocene (11,500 cal yr B.P. to the present). Examination of ?50 globally distributed paleoclimate records reveals as many as six periods of significant rapid climate change during the time periods 9000"8000, 6000"5000, 4200"3800, 3500"2500, 1200"1000, and 600"150 cal yr B…

  • A 3000-year high-resolution stalagmitebased record of palaeoclimate for northeastern South Africa

    Open Access•Karin Holmgren, Wibjörn Karlén et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1999•Cited by: 15•References: 7

High-resolution stable isotope variations and growth structure analyses of the last three millennia of a 6600-year stalagmite record at Cold Air Cave, Makapansgat Valley, South Africa, are presented. Growth layers, which are measurable over the last 250 years, are shown to be annual. The correlation between the width of growth layers and precipitation is strongly positive. Changes inδ 18 O andδ 13 C are positively correlated and inversely correla…

  • Paleoclimatic Significance of the Stable Isotopic Composition and Petrology of a Late Pleistocene Stalagmite from Botswana

Open Access•Karin Holmgren, Wibjörn Karlén et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1995

High-resolution δ 18 O and δ 13 C analyses of a stalagmite from Lobatse II Cave reveal late Pleistocene environmental changes in Botswana. Large shifts in δ 18 O and δ 13 C are observed between two main periods of deposition. The first period, between 51,000 and 43,000 yr B.P., was warm and humid and may have been associated with some C 3 vegetation. The second period, between 27,000 and 21,000 yr B.P., had temperatures approximately 2°C lower, a…
