Skin cancer in people with multiple sclerosis
Objective: The prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) varies with latitude: it increases with distance from the equator in both hemispheres. To seek evidence on whether solar radiation is a protective factor for MS, this study investigated whether skin cancer, as an indicator of solar radiation, is less common in people with MS than in others. Design: Analysis of a database of linked hospital records and death certificates. Setting: The Oxford Reg…
Atlas of Cancer Mortality in England and Wales 1968-1978
Death rates for an extensive list of different cancers have been calculated for each of the 1366 Local Authority areas [in England and Wales] as constituted in 1971 as well as aggregated areas such as Counties. Maps of the geographical distribution of these cancers are shown in this volume....Following the map sections of the atlas there is a one-page summary of some features of the deaths from each cancer. These include the numbers of deaths and…
Soft tissue sarcomas in agriculture and forestry workers
The National Cancer Register maintained by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS) was used to investigate the relative risks of soft tissue sarcomas among farmers, agricultural workers, and related occupational groups. The relative risk for the group as a whole was 1.15 (95% confidence limits 0.83-1.59). One of the four subgroups (which comprises farmers, farm managers, and market gardeners) experienced a relative risk of 1.7 which …
Sickness absence after inguinal herniorrhaphy
Eight hundred and ninety-nine men were studied, aged 16-65 inclusive, who underwent an elective inguinal herniorrhaphy during 1970 and 1971 in eight hospitals in Wessex, and under nine consultant surgeons. There was a significant variation in postoperative inpatient stay and total sickness absence between hospitals and between consultants. The physical activity involved in the patient's occupation, his age at operation, previous sickness absence,…
Study of disease associations from linked records
Comparisons are made between the principal diagnosis on discharge from hospital in successive periods of inpatient care for persons in the Oxford Record Linkage Study area admitted over a period of years. The observed numbers of pairs of diagnoses are compared with expected numbers computed to take account of the discharge rates in the population by age and sex and the number of man years of exposure. Three topics have been selected to display so…
An enquiry into the incidence and prognosis of undiagnosed abdominal pain treated in hospital
Diseases, Injuries and Causes of Death contains a special section for 'symptoms and ill-defined condi- tions regarding which no diagnosis classifiable elsewhere is recorded'. When a survey was made in the Oxford Record Linkage Study (ORLS) to determine the conditions most commonly leading to hospital inpatient investigation and treatment, it came as a surprise to find that abdominal pain for which no definite explanation could be found (ICD rubri…

Hospital morbidity in early life in relation to certain maternal and foetal characteristics and events at delivery
Using a system oflinked medical records (Acheson, 1964), it is possible not only to accumulate and to correlate information about successive events as they occur to individuals, but to bring together informa- tion about different members of a family (Newcombe, Kennedy, Axford, and James, 1959; Newcombe, 1964). This study exemplifies a simple application of this approach in which information about two classes of individual related by blood (mother…
Oxford Record Linkage Study
Background Modic type 1 changes (MC1) are fibrotic-inflammatory vertebral bone marrow lesions adjacent to degenerating discs. Patient with MC1 often develop low back pain [1]. In MC1, extra-cellular collagen is deposited, myelopoiesis is dysregulated, and bone is rapidly remodeled. These are signs of a chronic inflammation. The cellular mechanisms are unknown, yet bone marrow stromal cells (BMSC) are key regulators of myelopoiesis, can differenti…
Multiple Sclerosis in British Commonwealth Countries in the Southern Hemisphere
In the United States of America, which extend from approximately 260 to 490 North, the suggestion that a four-fold increase in the frequency of multiple sclerosis occurred between 300 and 400 was originally based on crude mortality data Recent detailed field studies have confirmed this impression (Kurland
