  • A settlement-geology model for dolmen distribution in the Levant

    James A Fraser, Kathleen Nicoll•ARTICLE•Levant•2025

Early surveyors, including Schumacher and Glueck, described a vast dolmen field on the Irbid plateau, rivalling the size of the largest concentrations of dolmens elsewhere in the Levant. This area also features a dense cluster of mounded sites, suggesting that this was a well-occupied settlement landscape in the mid to late 4th millennium BCE. Yet our understanding of these settlement and funerary landscapes, and the relationships between them, i…

  • Geomorphic changes and socio-environmental impacts of recent sand mining in the Sakarya River, NW Turkey

Open Access•Hilal Okur, Mehmet Korhan Erturaç et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropocene Review•2024•Referências: 53

Analysis of multi-temporal satellite images from 1980 to 2019, complemented by geomorphic mapping and field study, indicate that "loose sand" extraction of Sakarya River deposits from the Adapazarı Plain of NW Turkey significantly intensified during the last decade, and mining operations have caused complete and irreversible alteration of floodplain habitat in a total area amounting to ~970 hectares. Our reconstructions estimate the total amount …

Open Access•Luca Forti, Alessandro Perego et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2021

We present the geomorphological map of the northwestern part of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, where the landscape expresses the tectonic activity associated with the Arabia-Eurasia convergence and Neogene climate change. These processes influenced the evolution of landforms and fluvial pathways, where major rivers Tigris, Khabur, and Great Zab incise the landscape of Northeastern Mesopotamia Anticlinal ridges and syncline trough compose the Zagro…

  • Prospectando rochas fluviais e artefatos do Paleolítico Médio Africano descobertos ao longo do Rio Cunene, fronteira entre Angola e Namíbia

    Open Access•Kathleen Nicoll•ARTICLE•Journal of Lithic Studies•2017

  • Climatic changes and social transformations in the Near East and North Africa during the ‘long’ 4th millennium BC

Open Access•Joanne Clarke, Nicholas Brooks et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Reviews•2016

This paper explores the possible links between rapid climate change (RCC) and social change in the Near East and surrounding regions (Anatolia, central Syria, southern Israel, Mesopotamia, Cyprus and eastern and central Sahara) during the ‘long’ 4th millennium (∼4500–3000) BC. Twenty terrestrial and 20 marine climate proxies are used to identify long-term trends in humidity involving transitions from humid to arid conditions and vice versa. The f…

  • The Climate and Environment of Byzantine Anatolia

    J Haldon, Neil Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Interdisciplinary…•2014•Citada por: 13•Referências: 20

The integration of high-resolution archaeological, textual, and environmental data with longer-term, low-resolution data affords greater precision in identifying some of the causal relationships underlying societal change. Regional and microregional case studies about the Byzantine world-in particular, Anatolia, which for several centuries was the heart of that world-reveal many of the difficulties that researchers face when attempting to assess …

In this study, we compiled unpublished archival documentation of archaeological site locations from the southern part of the Cuyahoga River Valley in northeastern Ohio, USA, registered at the State of Ohio Historic Preservation Office into a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database. Using digitized soil shapefiles to generate a geomorphic data layer, we assessed the spatial and temporal distribution of 79 known archaeological sites by landfo…

  • Radiocarbon chronologies for prehistoric human occupation and hydroclimatic change in Egypt and Northern Sudan

    Open Access•Kathleen Nicoll•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2000•Referências: 17

This article compiles 536 published, uncalibrated radiocarbon ages from well-studied localities in the presently hyperarid Western Desert, or Arba'in Desert, in northeast Africa. The synthesis of these records frames the spatial and temporal context of prehistoric cultural activity during wet periods when the region was habitable (9000–6000 yr B.P.). The variability of records by region indicates that the Holocene was not marked by uniform hydroc…

  • Petrogenesis of artifact-bearing fossil-spring tufa deposits from Kharga Oasis, Egypt

Open Access•Kathleen Nicoll, Robert Giegengack et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1999•Referências: 6

Petrographic and geochemical study of artifact-bearing fossil-spring tufas in stratigraphic contexts associated with Upper Acheulean and Middle Stone Age-to-historic artifacts provides a basis for characterizing and comparing Quaternary tufa deposition and diagenesis across the Kharga Oasis region of south-central Egypt. Analysis of tufa deposits at Refûf Pass, Midauwara Pass, A‘in ‘Amur, and Umm el Dabadib suggest that the low Mg-carbonates were…

  • An Acheulian site near Bir Kiseiba in the Darb el Arba'in Desert, Egypt

    Open Access•C Vance Haynes, T A Maxwell et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1997•Referências: 4

A small concentration of Acheulian cleavers and handaxes within the driest region on Earth adds to the increasing evidence that the eastern Sahara was considerably more verdant during the Middle Pleistocene than it is today. The similarities to stone artifact assemblages of Acheulian sites in sub-Saharan Africa and in the Levant support the evidence for the movement of hominids, utilizing the Kombewa lithic technology, between Africa and the Midd…
