  • Reparatives Denken

Peter Ochs, Peter W Ochs et al.•BOOK•Reparatives Denken•2024

  • Pragmatism and Theology

    Open Access•Peter Ochs•ARTICLE•Modern Theology•2023

The noted Jewish scholar Harry Wolfson (d. 1929) claimed in youthful writings that the fifteenth‐century rabbinic thinker and physicist, Hasdai Crescas, was a pragmatist. This essay introduces evidence that there are, indeed, significant analogies between elements of Hasdai Crescas’s critique of Aristotle and elements of Charles Peirce’s pragmatism. The essay concludes that Crescas’s primary work, Light of the Lord ( Or Hashem ), displays a uniqu…

Open Access•Peter Ochs, Essam Fahim et al.•ARTICLE•Religions•2022•References: 10

Building on recent directions in religion-related social and political science, our essay addresses the need for location-specific and religion-specific scientific research that might contribute directly to local and regional interreligious peacemaking. Over the past 11 years, our US-Pakistani research team has conducted research of this kind. We have developed a social scientific method for diagnosing the probable near-future behavior of religio…

    Open Access•Peter Ochs•ARTICLE•Filosofskii Zhurnal•2019

argued that there were almost as many pragmatisms as pragmatists. Almost all pragmatists criticized abstractive and reductive reasoning in the modern academy, but most entertained different visions of how and to what end academic reasoning should be repaired. Smith's vision was shaped by his strong preference for the classical pragmatisms of Peirce, Dewey, James and also Royce, whose differences contributed to the inner dynamism of Smith's pragma…

  • Value Predicate Analysis

Open Access•Peter Ochs, Nauman Faizi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 26

This article introduces a language-based tool for addressing the role of religion in violent conflicts. Value predicate analysis (VPA) is an easily transportable, relatively uncomplicated early warning tool for measuring the probable near-future behavior of modest-sized religious groups in settings of potential conflict. We show that it is possible to identify a range of nine types of probable group behavior toward other groups. This approach sig…

Peter Ochs, Randi Rashkover•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•2017

Winner of the AAR’s 2016 Award for Excellence in the Study of Religion: Constructive-Reflective Studies In a day of talk show-caliber debates on matters of utmost gravity, Francis Beckwith’s Taking Rites Seriously teaches that rationality and reasonableness are not inherently secular ... or religious. Rather, public debates about urgent ethico-religious issues may be conducted rationally and reasonably from either secular or religious premises. T…

  • Outward Signs

    Open Access•Peter Ochs•ARTICLE•Modern Theology•2011

A complement to his Inner Grace, Outward Signs extends Cary's thesis in Augustine and the Invention of the Inner Self: that Augustine's Trinitarian and semiotic theology, groundbreaking as it was, remains beholden to a Platonist privileging of inner vs. outer and idea over sacramental performance. Outward Signs should be of special interest to readers of Modern Theology, because the inwardness Cary interrogates displays a dimension of Augustine's…

  • Reparative Reasoning

    Open Access•Peter Ochs•ARTICLE•Modern Theology•2009

A genealogical study that traces a “broadly Cartesian” pattern of argumentation: from Augustine's scriptural semiotic to the “narrowly Cartesian” practice of foundationalism to Charles Peirce's pragmatic and reparative semiotic. The essay argues (1) that Augustine transformed Stoic logic into a scriptural semiotic; (2) that this semiotic breeds both Cartesian foundationalism and the pragmatic semiotic that repairs it; (3) that Peirce's semiotic d…

  • Philosophic Warrants for Scriptural Reasoning

    Open Access•Peter Ochs•ARTICLE•Modern Theology•2006

Addressing readers who are already acquainted with the practices of Scriptural Reasoning (SR), this essay offers a logical strategy for warranting and testing such practices as well as all postmodern criticisms of modern inquiry. The strategy is to distinguish the logic of suffering, which is reducible to the binary terms of propositional logic, from the logic of repair, which is not. The essay argues that, if reduced to such binary terms, effort…

Peter Ochs•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•2006

DEAR AAR READER, Professor Segal appears to have taken umbrage with my proposal for teaching comparative religion by way of exploring dialogues among given religions or religious groups. Between my essay and his response, we may have a very helpful illustration of the kind of interminable dispute I claimed is rife in modern religious studies and theology: that is, a dispute for which there are as yet no shared terms for dialogue. As I read him, P…

Debates about "religious studies vs. theology" may be irresolvable because they are symptoms of a crisis of a different order: the academy's still-colonialist relation to our civilization(s)' folk-or-wisdom traditions, "religious" traditions in particular. Scholars of religious studies or theology practice a kind of "colonialism writ-small" when they remove their subject matter from its lived, societal contexts and re-situate it in conceptual wor…

Peter Ochs•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•2006

DEAR ELLEN ARMOUR, Thank for your essay on “Theology in modernity’s wake.” I found your words point hopefully and helpfully to ways that we can mediate some of the inherited tensions between theological and religious studies. I appreciate both how you linked these tensions to the dilemmas of modernism and how you asked us not to overstate those dilemmas—in other words, to recognize that we have to face up to how we remain modern in many ways. • Rabbinic text process theology

Peter Ochs•ARTICLE•Journal of Jewish Thought and…•1992

If it adopted the a prlOYl principles of A.N. Whitehead and of Christian process theology, a Jewish process theology would be a Jewish variety of natural theology.Mordecai Kaplan's reconstructionism came close to this.It might even be termed a Jewish natural process theology, with a strong sense of the natural role of tradition and, thus, in this case, an openness to the cultural milieu of rabbinic tradition, as well as a commitment to the pragma…
