  • Democratic Resilience and the Time(s) of Organization. An Agenda for Analyzing Societies Under Pressure

Open Access•Robert Jungmann, Michael Grothe‐hammer•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Sociology•2026

Democratic resilience is not only a frequently discussed concept in the social sciences but also a vital societal concern and an increasingly relevant social phenomenon. Organizational sociology can make a meaningful contribution to these debates. Organizations play a central role in shaping the ability of democratic societies to cope with, adapt to, and transform in the face of autocratic threats. They do not act alone but interact with other or…

  • Organizational critique and the design of a prefigurative social order: The case of an alternative organization positioning in integration work

    Open Access•Robert Jungmann, Florence Eyok•ARTICLE•Current Sociology•2026•Cited by: 1•References: 21

In a neighborhood house (named NOVOS hereafter), a critique of the usual way of organizing integration leads to an alternative organizational form that provides integration work. Grounded in structuration theory, our focus is on how a group of knowledgeable activists reflexively designs a prefigurative order informed by this organizational critique. They do so via specific practices and continuous efforts of organizational regulation. The social …

  • Assessing Organizations as Responsible Entities Adequately. A Practice-Based Approach to Organizational Agency

    Open Access•Robert Jungmann•ARTICLE•Human Studies•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 40

In complex settings, organizations overlap with other collective entities in time and space even as they struggle for visibility or invisibility as relevant entities. Moreover, they do not act as legal persons or complete organizational actors all the time. Such settings give rise to a question that bears on the fundamental question of adequately identifying and assessing causal forces in social processes, namely: Who or what is responsible here?…

  • (Re-)Vitalizing the Concept of Organization: Inspirations From Recent Social Theory

    Open Access•Robert Jungmann, Michael Grothe‐hammer et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 110

In this essay, we introduce recent debates on both concepts of organization and organization's future. Since Max Weber's ideas gained acceptance, there has been a strong link between social theory (rationalized modernity) and a concept of organization (bureaucracy) in organization theory as well as organizational sociology. Today, organizational scholarship challenges, but at the same time defends, this classical link. We argue that both position…

  • Reflexive Organization and Radicalized Modernity: Revisiting the Organization-Society Nexus

    Open Access•Arnold Windeler, Robert Jungmann•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2024•References: 40

Organizations and societies have changed. Bureaucracy, as modernity's form of organization, has transformed into a reflexive organization, coordinating the conditions of system reproduction in time-space with increased reflexivity. Simultaneously, modernity with capitalism, industrialization, and rationalization as its institutional dimensions radicalized; reflexive organizations as one of its driving forces and the reflexive organization as the …

  • A Platform for Debating the Role of Organization in, for, and Throughout Society

    Open Access•Michael Grothe‐hammer, Robert Jungmann•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Sociology•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Welcome to JOSOWriting this introductory essay for the journal on which we have worked for so many years entails some problems, not just emotionally (because we worked so hard on it), but more generally where this format is concerned.Of course, an introduction needs to set forth the tasks and relevant phenomena to be addressed in the journal. And we should be responsible for crafting it.Moreover, together with a group of diverse scholars, many of …

  • Complex innovation, organizations, and fields: Toward the organized transformation of today's innovation societies

    Open Access•Arnold Windeler, Robert Jungmann•ARTICLE•Current Sociology•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 38

Societies are increasingly using innovation as a point of reference, thereby progressively transforming societies into innovation societies. Today, complex innovations are characteristically produced in fields where organizations play significant roles, as prom inent innovation models indicate. However, there is a lack of a conceptual framework to study the interplay between organizations and innovation fields. From a perspective informed by stru…

  • Ação Coletiva Organizada E Os Novos Coletivos: Uma Heurística Teórico-Prática

    Open Access•Robert Jungmann•ARTICLE•Teoria e Cultura•2022•References: 5

    Robert Jungmann•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Soziologie•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 14

Cristina Besio, Robert Jungmann et al.•ARTICLE•Soziale Systeme•2014

Ei…
