  • Ingroup Bias, Classic Ethnocentrism, and Non‐Ethnocentrism Among American Whites

    Open Access•David Raden•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•2003•Cited by: 9•References: 18

This study collapsed ingroup bias into two types: a classic Sumnerian type, in which favorable perceptions of the ingroup were linked to unfavorable perceptions of the outgroup, and a simple ingroup bias type that consisted of all other instances of ingroup superiority. Simple ingroup bias was the more common type among a General Social Survey (GSS) national probability sample of 1,119 non‐Jewish whites who rated Jews, blacks, Asians, and Hispani…

  • Ratings of Characteristics of Ethnic Groups by Authoritarians and Nonauthoritarians When Stereotypes Vary in Favorability

    Open Access•David Raden•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2002

White non-Jewish participants in the 1990 General Social Survey with low scores on Tolerance of deviation ("Intolerant"), a measure of authoritarianism, rated African Americans more unfavorably than did Tolerant respondents on two traits, intelligence and laziness, when stereotypes about the latter group are unfavorable. But the Intolerant were not more negative in their evaluations than the Tolerant when Jews, a group for whom the stereotypes on…

  • Is Anti‐Semitism Currently Part of an Authoritarian Attitude Syndrome

    Open Access•David Raden•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•1999•Cited by: 11•References: 6

This study used data from the 1990 General Social Survey to investigate the extent to which anti‐Semitism had syndromic relationships with other authoritarianism‐related attitudes among American white non‐Jews. The correlational and factor analytic connections between four measures of anti‐Semitism and the other attitudes were generally weak. There were no clear‐cut differences between respondents high and low in education in the strength of thes…

  • Are symbolic racism and traditional prejudice part of a contemporary authoritarian attitude syndrome

    Open Access•David Raden•ARTICLE•Political Behavior•1994•Cited by: 7•References: 16

  • Relationships between Anti-Semitism and Authoritarian Attitudes in a National Survey

    Open Access•David Raden•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1993

A measure of anti-Semitism had consistently low correlations with authoritarian attitude items among 1203 white non-Jews in the 1988 General Social Survey

  • Are Scores on Conventional Attitude Scales Confounded with other Measures of Attitude Strength? Findings from the General Social Survey

    Open Access•David Raden•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1989

This research investigated the relations of five strength-related attitude dimensions and scores on a conventional attitude scale that measured attitude toward the traditional female role. The respondents were 837 women who participated in the 1983 General Social Survey. The strength-related dimensions, which resembled attitude properties that have been used as moderators of the attitude-behavior relationship, included attitude importance, adequa…

  • Strength-Related Attitude Dimensions

    David Raden•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•1985•Cited by: 18

Definition de la force des attitudes sociales et etude de ses relations avec les differentes qualites de ces attitudes (valeur affective, cristallisation, degre de certitude, experience directe, etc.)

  • Dogmatism and Conventionality

    Open Access•David Raden•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1982

The scores of 68 undergraduates on Rokeach's Dogmatism Scale correlated significantly with their responses to a conventionality measure, as dogmatism theory would predict. These attitudinal findings are consistent with the results of experimental research on the manifestations of dogmatism and authoritarianism

  • Authoritarianism Revisited: Evidence for an Aggression Factor

    Open Access•David Raden•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1981

A principal components factor analysis was performed on the scores of 245 undergraduates to a short version of the F Scale and measures of prejudice, attitude toward welfare, toleration of political deviance, punitiveness toward criminals, and support of the Vietnam War. The analysis produced two factors. One was an authoritarian aggression factor which was consistent with the Berkeley levels of personality approach and previous factorial researc…

  • A Multivariate Analysis of Bivariate Attitude-Behavior Relationships Based on Marginal Popularities

    Open Access•David Raden•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1981•Cited by: 1•References: 8

The results of a contextual analysis of bivariate attitude-behavior findings, which is based on marginal popularities, are presented. The substantial rise in consistency as the popularity of behavior increases suggests that behavioral popularity has a strong contextual effect on the attitude-behavior relationship. Attitudinal popularity, however, is not positively related to consistency. The implications of the findings for the reference group ap…

  • Authoritarianism and Overt Aggression

    Open Access•David Raden•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1980

High authoritarians gave higher levels of shock than low authoritarians to a trainee confederate of the experimenter when they served as trainers in a Buss-type learning experiment. There was, however, no interaction between scores on a modified F Scale and race of target for the 71 white students. The results, along with earlier findings, provide evidence of generality for authoritarian aggression

  • Prejudice and Hostile Behavior: A Laboratory Study of an Attitude-Behavior Relationship

    David Raden•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•1980•References: 15

This research examined the relationship between several measures of prejudice toward blacks and a type of overt behavior, shock-giving, directed toward a black. The opportunity to shock either a black or white trainee was given to 69 student subjects, who had previously completed a questionnaire measure of prejudice, in a situation where they served as trainers in a Buss-type learning experiment. The study employed a correlational analysis and an…

  • An Item Analysis Based Update of the Nettler-Huffman Radicalism-Conservatism Scale

    Open Access•David Raden•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1979

An item analysis of the Nettler-Huffman Radicalism-Conservatism Scale, based on the responses of 333 undergraduates, indicated that the scale continues to be a useful measure of political attitude. A 10-item revised version of the scale had a split-half reliability of .80 and substantial item-total correlations

  • Situational Thresholds and Attitude-Behavior Consistency

    David Raden•ARTICLE•Sociometry•1977•Cited by: 1

  • Strength-Related Attitude Dimensions

    David Raden•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•1985•Cited by: 18
