Reading the landscape
The formulation of a robust analytical framework is critical to the systematic interpretation and understanding of the landscape and its constitutive elements. Such a framework undergirds theoretical inquiry while offering methodological orientation for scholars and practitioners seeking to delineate the fundamental components and relational dynamics that inform landscape epistemologies. This article revisits and advances a set of landscape axiom…

The ecomuseum as a platform for territorial development
Ecomuseums are ‘in situ’ museums of the community addressing the relationship between people, society, space and time. An ecomuseum is based on structured narratives on selected themes through which the specificity and uniqueness of a place can be captured, conveyed and highlighted, and the participation of local people in the management of their local resources and decision-making can be strengthened, offering opportunities and prospects for qua…
Towards landscape conscience
This article aims to show the reciprocal significance of space to human conscience and vice versa. We argue that human conscience is equally founded on external, spatial relations rather than strictly internal states or processes, and we apply the concept of ‘conscience’ to the landscape (‘landscape conscience’). Through an extensive literature review of relevant scientific fields, the article builds its argument for the spatiality of conscience …
Social entrepreneurship, local action and territorial branding on Lesvos Island. Towards a re-territorialisation process of small olive farming
Social entrepreneurship is a strategy that integrates economic and social value creation so as to unlock local productive potential and foster social progress through alternative funding strategies or management schemes. In Greece, social entrepreneurship has very newly emerged as concept and practice. Social economy could play an essential role for lagging islands, such as Lesvos Island, to survive in the new era of continuous change and become …
Drivers of European landscape change
Understanding complex processes of landscape change is crucial to guide the development of future landscapes and land resources. Through Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping, we studied the processes of landscape change of six different environmental zones in Europe. Results show that landscapes are complex systems, with many interactions. Except for one, all regions show a strong decline in landscape quality. Dominant drivers are EU policy and the global eco…
North Aegean island landscapes as ecomuseums
The main advantage of the Aegean islands, in generating national, regional, or international competitiveness, compared to the areas on the continental mainland, is their natural and cultural assets, their cultural landscapes. Consequently, the organized utilization of cultural heritage, rich biodiversity, and the unique Aegean landscape, could make the islands attractive as places to live or work and help them fulfill their sustainability goals. …
Landscape values and the question of cultural sustainability
The article highlights the factor of tentativeness in the applicability of the cultural sustainability concept to landscape values in the case of Greece. The authors used a comparative questionnaire survey to draw out indicative trends in lay landscape conscience (gauged as perceptions, values, preferences, feelings and behaviours) in relation to the Greek landscape in the Arcadia region and on the island of Lesvos. Differences were found between…
