Contemplating the coronavirus crisis through a postmigrant lens?
This chapter takes the coronavirus pandemic that first emerged in December 2019 as a springboard to ref lect on how society deals with forced migration from a postmigrant perspective. Such a theoretical vantage seeks to 'demigratize' research on forced migration (Römhild 2017). Analytical inquiry then is not a mode of special research on refugees but rather it investigates the societal power relations and social inequalities that affect all human…
I Want to Give Something Back
This article analyzes the support relationships of 10 asylum-seeking young people who fled to Germany between 2010 and 2015. It highlights their wish for reciprocity as a need in their country of destination and expands upon Sahlin’s typology of reciprocal relationships (generalized, balanced, and negative reciprocity) by the type of “refused reciprocity.” “Refused reciprocity” occurs when people are keen to reciprocate for support they have rece…
Refugees across the generations. Generational relations between the 'GDR children of Namibia' and their children
This article represents the first ever analysis of the generational relations of an otherwise largely neglected group – the ‘GDR children of Namibia’ and their children. The ‘GDR children of Namibia’ are a group of 430 people who were removed from Namibian refugee camps between 1979 and 1989 and taken to the German Democratic Republic (GDR) as part of a solidarity pact between the South-West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) and the Socialist …
Vermessen, Klassifizieren, Zuweisen.
An analysis of metaphors in the biographies of the 'GDR children of Namibia
Metaphors are linguistically dense images that transfer terms from their original usage to a different context and describe actions and objects beyond their literal meaning. This article uses Rudolf Schmitt's metaphor analysis (2017) to gain insight into the experiences of the so-called GDR children of Namibia. This term refers to a group of approximately 430 people who, as part of a solidarity project between the South West Africa People's Organ…
Agency und Vulnerabilität
Soziale Arbeit, founded in 1951, is an independent academic journal which addresses developments in the context of social work. It is one of the most important publication media in its field and is read by teachers, students and researchers in social work and social pedagogy as well as by professionals and managers from associations and institutions
You are special
The article analyses a historical case of politically induced flight. The so-called German Democratic Republic (GDR) children from Namibia are about 430 people brought to the GDR between 1979 and 1989. They came from Namibian refugee camps and were part of a solidarity project between South West African People's Organization (SWAPO) and the GDR. They were educated to become the Namibian elite once the country had been liberated. Their stay was to…

The Land Appropriation of a New World
Shortly after the contours of the earth emerged as a true globe — not just sensed as myth but apprehensible as fact and measurable as space — there arose a wholly new and hitherto unimaginable problem: the spatial ordering of the earth in terms of international law. The new global image required a new spatial order. That is the situation which arose with the circumnavigation of the earth and the great discoveries of the 15th and 16th centuries. I…
Appropriation/Distribution/Production
The scholarly treatment of questions of social life is divided into juridical, economic, sociological and other areas of specialization. The need for a comprehensive consideration acknowledging the unity of actual relations is becoming more evident. For this reason, so is the scholarly problem — to find immediately intelligible basic categories which allow a proper formulation of questions common to various disciplines. The present effort to deal…
Ex Captivitate Salus
I have experienced the tribulations of fate. Victories and defeats, revolutions and restorations. Inflations and deflations, bombings, Defamations, broken regimes and broken pipes, Hunger and cold, internment and solitary confinement. Through it all I have passed, And through me it all has passed. I am acquainted with the abundant varieties of terror, The terror from above and the terror from below, Terror on the land and terror from the air, Ter…
The Legal World Revolution
Even the thinking of professional revolutionaries progresses, as evidenced today in legal revolution. According to the German constitutional jurist, Rudolf Smend, who died in 1975, the German people suffer from a “touching need for legality.” Smend came to this conclusion not only as historian of the Supreme Court of the German Reich, but also as observer of the positivistic normativism of his own time. Recently an old and experienced Spanish rev…
