Constructing Home in Vienna’s Municipal Housing: Exclusions, Architectural Utopias and ‘Lightness’ in a City of Housing for All
Drawing upon life history interviews with 11 residents from three social housing study sites in Vienna, this article explores how the social and material provision of social housing transforms residents’ experience of home. The article locates residents’ everyday practices of homemaking within the context of ‘Red Vienna’, a city branding of housing for all, and explores the construction of boundaries, exclusions, and difference within Vienna’s so…
Common Sense as Political Struggle: Asserting the Right to Home Following the Grenfell Tower Fire
The Grenfell Tower fire is a tragic manifestation of the brutality of the neoliberal conditionality of home. The systematic devaluing of the lives of residents in the social housing block is the result of stigmatisation-fuelled neglect. This article explores the ideological formation of the 'ideals' of home ownership, asserting a right to home as a means to resist the 'unequal distribution of precarity' that defines neoliberal formations of home
Campus closures and the devaluing of emplaced Higher Education: Widening participation in neoliberal times
The un/methodology of 'theoretical intuitions: Resources of Generations Gone Before, Thinking and Feeling Class
Class Matters, by Mahony and Zmroczek (1997), was an important collection marking working-class women’s contribution to the academy and society. In taking up the question of class, this paper considers the ways in which a partial and particular discourse reflected its author’s material circumstances, including her preferred conceptual interests as well as her un(self)conscious knowledge. In revisiting the way class ‘mattered’, and continues to ma…
Representation as politics: Asserting a feminist ethic in ethnographic research
As ethnographers we are familiar with methodological debates problematising ethnography's inherited and inherent connections to ideas of authenticity commonly mobilised to legitimate modes of representation. In this paper, we engage with the post-structural philosophies of Jacques Rancière and Judith Butler, to argue that methodological tools of representation are always ‘political’ and as such shape the limitations of what can be known. In order…
The Council Estate and “Being Placed”: Everyday Resistances to the Stigmatization of Community
Building upon contemporary analyses of the interconnections between stigmatized places and identity formation, this paper explores processes of place-based identity formation on a British council estate. Connecting post-structural theorisations of identity and space, the paper explores the tensions between structure and agency implicit within theorisations of place-based identity as a community. Conceptualising the entanglement of structure and a…
Habitus as foregrounded history: Theorising affect in the social formation of embodied practice
This article builds upon a tradition of feminist critical engagements with Bourdieu, developing the concept of ‘foregrounded history’ as a way to conceptualise the temporal and affective in processes of habitus formation. Through analysis of affects ‘produced through the social encounter’ within everyday childhoods on a British council estate, the article explores habitus as histories both embodied and felt in the present. Drawing upon ethnograph…
