Resisting to spatial exclusion and fighting for economic inclusion
Around South Africa, the major cities are being narrated around entrepreneurialism, which emphasises competitiveness, innovation and partnership between local government and private corporates in the marketing of the city within and beyond the national borders. A large fraction of the population living in those cities is made up of immigrants from other African countries, who are frequently subjected to economic-driven xenophobic violent attacks …
Between Monarchy and Demands for Political Change
This article examines how the trade unions in Swaziland have shifted their activism from local to regional and international arenas, crystallising their positions around new demands that attracted the ban of their activities. The reasons for such a shift are critically discussed in the light of contemporary political and economic crises affecting the kingdom of Swaziland. Using the social movement theory and interviews collected from union leader…
Integration from the Beach
Data gathered longitudinally through mixed methods illustrates how West African migrants in Pointe-Noire (Congo Brazzaville) use their position in artisanal fisheries to negotiate a “right to settle and work.” The study documents how their practices in a contested beach space create informal institutions that facilitate their collective attitude of national belonging. It highlights how practical aspects of integration are negotiated between immig…
Informal Land Sale and Housing in the Periphery of Pointe-Noire
This article examines the relations between practices in informal land transactions under customary tenure and spatial differentiation among suburbs in the periphery of the city of Pointe-Noire, Congo-Brazzaville. Urban sprawl is a permanent feature of urbanisation in Congo-Brazzaville that not only propagates slums for low-income dwellers but also entails locally embedded ways of building the city in the absence of state-led planning. The case o…
Appropriation of Land for Housing and African Immigrant Entrepreneurship in the City of Pointe-Noire (Congo-Brazzaville)
Reaping the benefits of preferential trade agreement
The article critically examines the experiences of young Africans from west and central Africa who migrate to study in the higher education system of South Africa. These experiences are captured through such aspects as the considerations around the choice of South Africa as a destination, prior attempts to migrate for study in the north, elements that matter in the choice of a south African university where to study and projects of returning home…
Matrimony relations and business in a fishing migrant community (periphery of Pointe-Noire, Congo-Brazzaville)
This paper examines the entrepreneurial activities of female migrants in the informal artisanal fishing sector along the coastal line of Congo-Brazzaville. It shows the extent to which these women have achieved an insertion into a market niche, fish smoking, which builds on the livelihoods of co-ethnic migrant fishermen. Women rely on the fish supplied by male migrants including their husbands to run their fish smoking activities. In return, they…
Student Migration in South Africa
The paper examines the migration of students from francophone Africa (Central and West Africa) to South Africa (SA). Various sources of information were used including a survey of students conducted at the University of the Western Cape that serves as a case study. The results reported in this paper clearly indicate that the migration of students from francophone Africa is part of the massive migration influxes of international students currently…
Immigrants and Coastal Artisan Fishing in a Context of Constrained Spatial Expansion in the City of Pointe-Noire (Congo-Brazzaville)
The immigration Issues in the Post-Apartheid South Africa
The paper provides a critical appraisal of changes that have marked the political discourses on immigration from within and outside the Southern Africa region in the aftermath of the 1994 elections in the Republic of South Africa. It also provides insights into the connections of these changing discourses with the rise of social intolerance of immigration from other African countries. The immigration policy in the apartheid period was highly cont…
Public-private partnership (PPP) and water-supply provision in urban Africa
This paper addresses the introduction of a public–private partnership (PPP) for water provision in urban Congo. It describes the organisational context before and after PPP and discusses the various outcomes of the partnership, both positive and negative. Despite some promising early results, the PPP arrangements did not develop as planned and the private enterprises ran into financial problems. The role of the political environment in compromisi…
