  • A Global Generation? Youth Studies in a Postcolonial World

    Open Access•Joschka Philipps•ARTICLE•Societies•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 28

Today’s young people navigate a world that becomes simultaneously more interconnected and less capable of silencing long-standing inequities. What analytical perspectives does a sociology of youth and generations require in such a context? • Crystallising contention

    Joschka Philipps•ARTICLE•Review of African Political Economy•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 26

This article critically reviews the recent debate on social movements and protests in African Studies. It problematises prevailing conceptualisations, addresses the methodological difficulties of data gathering and scrutinises theoretical references in contemporary scholarship. As an alternative to established approaches and based on fieldwork in Conakry and Kampala, the author suggests capturing the dynamic nature of protest movements through th…

This article traces this process and conceptualises Kampala's urban politics as a politics of crystallisation: as attempts to structure highly fluid dynamics into something concrete. The article is based on ethnographic research amongst opposition ac…

  • Dealing with diversity

    Joschka Philipps•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth Studies•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 23

While African youth now feature among the most-researched phenomena in African Studies and Africa-focused social sciences, scholarship continues to shy away from the field's most daunting challenge. As the oversized analytical category ‘youth’ cannot tame the diversity and the ambiguity of the phenomenon ‘youth’, it remains difficult to develop tangible theories and reduce the fuzziness that characterises the current debate. In this paper, I revi…
